  1. Anyone have any experience with the Chris Carmichael on line training
system? I'm a club rider and wondering if the recreational system would do
    me any good.

Overpriced and underfocused since you're not a Nat level racer. Find a decent
local coach and watch the improvement.

  3. I disagree with TritonRider's post. I've been with CTS now for a year and a
half on the "Sport" program, and it has been fantastic.

Started out as a pretty good club rider who could hang with the racers on
good days. Under the CTS program (which is not all that expensive at like
$30/month), you now have a specific coach (unlike before where it was the
"coach-bank" and any coach would answer your e-mails) who you can e-mail as
often as you like (and 30 mins of phone time/month) and a program tailored
to your fitness level and goals, it is really good. Access to their
booklets, brochures and the CTS training manual gives you insight into what
you're doing and why in your training and nutrition. The program is very
effective, and the periodic field tests give you a metric as to how you're
    improving.

For about a buck a day I don't think you can beat it. I went from pretty
good club rider to (within a year) doing my first two triathlons, never
having raced to being a Cat 4 crit/road racer, and taking my 9 hour time for
a 170 mile road race down to 7:20 (and feeling really good afterwards!).
And the program is fun too.

    Can't rate em high enough....

  5. Shop around as well. Visit www.bicyclecoach.com and you will see a lot of
coaches listed. Compare CTS with one of them in your area.

I believe that for a beginning or lower cat cyclist, having someone that can
come out and ride with you or watch you ride is superior to a coach via the
    internet in most cases.

    Good luck

  6. I've had a few, but not that bad I've had like 3 in the last year or so.
One interesting thing is that you get different viewpoints with each one,
and as long as you don't take what any of them say as gospel, and pick the
best of each, that can be a good thing.

For a really high performance cyclist, I don't know that I'd go with online
coaches either. But club riders wanting to break into the higher
performance arena, this is a cost effective way to get some good info,
training program and advice. But for mving beyond hat, I agree with you.
Having somene with you who can critique your riding and training is the
    best...

  7. I'll admit I'm biased here, as I'm a coach, but I've picked up, or
know other coaches who have picked up clients directly from CTS.
$30/month sounds great but it undercuts the pricing of good coaches
who try to make a decent wage. Me personally, I charge more and give
more (time) and get to know each client well (even my few west coast
clients). In my opinion, find someone local, or at least someone who
will be able to meet you sometime during the year, or who will
communicate with you. As Max Testa told me when I was getting back
into coaching, "Anyone can write a good training program, but few
coach. You need to be a coach."

    Good luck,
    CH

Chris that was pretty much my point originally. You can dig up an awful lot of
training information and plans for next to nothing. This will get you started
on being vaguely fit, but really isn't an efficient way to go about things.
Paying somebody a monthly fee to send you a computerized training plan is a
waste of money IMHO because you can find that yourself.
A good coach is providing a lot more than that.

My coach, Tim Roach, always said, "you get what you pay for", in essence
that is very true. The poster said he paid $30.00 a month and improved from
what it looked like to me about $30.00 a month worth and oh got to talk to
someone for 30 minutes a month. There are times that I talk with my coach 30
minutes a DAY when training. Most of probably know this already, but I will
reiterate it anyway. If you have never been formally coached and you are a
relatively new or inexpereinced rider, ANY amount of structured training
will garner you what seems to be an enormus amount of benefit. OTOH if you
are an expereinced rider and HAVE been formally coached for many years, it
isn't always easy to see the improvements made. Inaother words, the better,
stronger and faster you get, the harder it is to get MORE better, stronger
and faster. For me personally, I want my coach RIGHT THERE when I am
training, watching me, my pedal stroke, my body language, my effort, if he
can't see that stuff (online coaching) you can never reach your full
    potential.
