That is precisely how he puts it. One thing that Lance has brought to the
sport is a non-traditional (for Europeans anyway) view of what it means to
be second. It seems to have spread throughout cycling that now 2nd place is
equal to first loser. He even states that his biggest motivation is his fear
of losing (as opposed to a great desire to win). IOW, if he goes down
without a win, he will me remorseful that he started in the first place (but
won't admit it afterwards).

That mindset is a strange one to me. I understand it (and know that's
how LA puts it), but it still seems pretty negative. "I don't want to lose"
versus "I want to win". Oh well, everyone has their own bag of tricks they
use for motivation. But I'd be willing to bet that Bjarne Riis motivates
his guys with a "You can win this race" message, rather than, "You don't
wanna lose this, do ya?"

Hi Howard
I'd have to do a lot of digging but I remember seeing a study on the
psychological factors and motivations in elite athletes. IIRC this obsessive
fear of failure was almost universal in the best in all the sports they
surveyed.
Wish I could remember where I saw it. maybe someone will bail me out here.
