Fabian Wegmann was in the breakaway at the Giro yesterday, and after picking up some easy mountain points, was caught by Cunego and 2 other Saeco riders. For some reason he worked to carry them up a mountain pass before cracking, with Phil Liggett commenting on what a silly move that was, and Paul Sherwin saying it must be his inexperience showing.

Gerolsteiner's Fabian Wegmann is getting closer to finishing in Milan with the green mountains jersey on his shoulders. The 23 year old picked up more valuable climber's points in yesterday's 16th stage, and now leads Damiano Cunego by 45 points to 38. Cunego probably has a different jersey in mind in Milan, and Wegmann did his green jersey chances no harm by helping Saeco's Eddy Mazzoleni and Andrea Tonti pull Cunego up to the front of the race in the finale yesterday. He may find that favour returned in the coming days. "Fabian is my friend. I will help him keep the jersey until Milan," race leader Cunego was quoted by DPA as saying.

Nice godfather talk from the boy, but Cunego is in no position to do that (help Wegmann). Just how is he supposed to go about it? Tow Wegmann up the first climbs and then take off in the finale? If Saeco's cards remain with Cunego, he'll have to put keep putting time into the Ukrainians, just to play it safe. Given the profiles of the remaining stages, that pretty much precludes final KOM honors for anyone but him.
Wegmann may *physically* keep the jersey, though (maybe that's what sly ole Cunego meant anyway).

Wegmann is still working hard in the chase group, and has just blown himself up completely. He'll probably get his reward in the next few days. No Saeco riders are going to chase him for the mountains jersey.

The problem is that Cunego might take the jersey himself, even tough he has no intention to do it. And by working, Wegmann ensured that Cunego got another 10 points at the last mountain of the day, and he is now only 7 points behind Wegmann, and Cunego might very well win a few more high points mountains, in his hunt for GC glory.
I question if Wegmann has the climbing legs to take point at climbs like Gavia and Mortirolo. If not, then I think the green jersey will be Cunegos

I think he means that he won't ask Saeco to chase down a break with Wegmann in it until the last climb. Jalabert didn't win his last mountain jersey by taking points on mountain top finishes either.

Send a teammate into the break with him. He will serve himself, Simoni and Wegmann simultaneously.

I think that if the anti-Saeco front wants to try something at all, true hostilities may well develop that don't confine themselves to the waning moments of the respective stages (look where Cunego attacked yesterday). The ensuing scenario would likely crush Wegmann's prospects. It just seems such a romantic consideration for the (potential) circumstances.

Who could take his place? Bob Roll is a funny guy, but to fill an hour and a half every day with just one other person, covering a kind of event where maybe a half-dozen important things happen on the way to the finish line in an average day, Phil & Paul are unparalleled. I can think of a few current riders who might make for great English-language commentators though, like Robbie McEwen, Magnus Backstedt, Bobby Julich...

I Hope it doesn't happen anytime soon. Our version of Phil here in New England, [censored] Ring retired last year and it's just amazing what a hole that actually leaves. Alan Atwood, and Verheul do a good job, but they can't/don't do as many races, and [censored]'s stories and knowledge are incredible and pretty much irreplaceable. Bill C
