I've never purchased a set of snow/ice bike tires but personally I'd go for
a set with sharp little knobby things all over the
outside.......................

you might what to look at studded tires, I have seen them in the bike shops.

Make yerself some studded tyres - easy as can be - start with an old-ish
knobby, drill holes through the knobs where you want studs, get hardened
steel machine screws of the right length, screw through from the inside of
the tyre. Make some sort of protective cover for the crew heads - tape, old
slick tyre with bead removed, or my favourite idea - get a can of automotive
'vulcanising rubber solution' (patch glue, but more for the money). Coat
inside of tyre with it. Coat an inner tube that you've sanded rough with it
too, but just the 'outer' half.

Place tube partly inflated into tyre, and inflate more until it fills the
tyre. Let glue dry, deflate. Now, either just cut the valve stem off and
leave it, or cut off, then trim the tube so there's now just a single layer
left there. Good stuff, all done!

A buddy of mine rode all last winter on a set of IRC Backcountrys - he swore
by them and said they were more than adequate- even without the studs.
He even did a double century on them- in February in a snow storm...and they
were fine...in the Southern Ontario snowbelt area.

Nokian 296 Extreme tires on the bike.

You could certainly do a lot worse!

Nokian 296's will be great for the road and ice. For snow, off road, they
can be a chore to ride. I can't give a brand name that I recommend for snow
because it doesn't matter. Get the widest tire you can, keep the pressure
low, and spin.

Get a stud.
