  1. Everyone trues their rims....

    Has anyone ever static and dynamic balanced their rims? Can rims be
    balanced? how do you do it?

    Adjust the hubs so that there's play. Rotate the axle back and forth,
    reducing friction, until the heavy spot goes down. Apply weight at the top.
    Spin the wheel to see if you can feel if it's unbalanced. Adjust weights as
    necessary. Readjust hubs until there's no play.

    Nobody balances their wheels because the effect at the low RPMs at which
    wheels spin aren't an issue.

    If you are super anal you could balance them with a bubble balancer but
    there's no reason to. If you have a reflector or bike computer magnet,
    put it opposite the valve stem.

    That depends. My experience (building Mavic's) is that the joint directly
    opposite the valve is the heaviest part of the rim. Of course, this doesn't
    take into account the weight of the valve stem itself. But that should be
    simple enough to figure out. Assuming you have access to a scale that
    measures light enough, such as in Grains.

    Procedure:

    Remove tire and tube, place wheel on truing stand. Cut the stem from a
    tube and attach to the rim's stem hole. This is best done with a Presta stem.

    Lightly spin the wheel and observe which part of the wheel comes to rest at
    the bottom. Attached a zip-tie around the rim directly opposite the rest point.
    Make sure to record the weight of the zip-tie. Carefully attach weights to the
    tie until horizontal balance is achieved.

    Adding the weights and the tie together with give the balanced weight. If
    attaching the balancing weights to the rim itself, you would need to divide the
    weight in halve and apply to each side of the rim to insure lateral balance.

    Given centrifugal force, slower riding speeds may require additional weights
    placed perpendicular to the valve/joint balance. Possibly up to eight if you are
    a really slow rider.

    All that said, I've had a long work day followed by several beers, so if I have
    made any mistakes, please bring them to my attention. After all, there is no
    room for error in a situation as critical as this. Safety first.
