You're quite right, there usually is more to it than that. How many
cogs/chain rings is your friend's set of index shifters designed to handle?
7, 8, 9 or 10 in back? 2 or 3 in front? How many cogs / chain rings does
your old bike have? 5, 6, 7 or 8 in back? 2 or 3 in front? What make are
your friend's index shifters? What make are the derailleurs on your
Cannondale?
Newer derailleurs (after about 1988) are indeed shaped differently than
older ones (you don't say how old your Cannondale is), just as you surmised.
The combined index shifters/brake levers on modern road bikes are nice for
road racers, but otherwise index shifting is just not that big a deal, IMHO.
If you're happy with your Cannondale, keep riding it, and keep it in good
repair as long as you can. If you really feel the need for index shifting,
buy a new bike.
