They are available now. Just gotta find a bike shop that has a supplier that
has them, we do.

BUT expect ultegra 9s stuff to be tough as shimano is headlong onto ultegra 10s
production. Expect some hefty price increase as well.

a custom cassette that goes 14-15-17-19-21-24-27-30-34. I don't even need
Ultegra; 105 or even Tiagra would be fine.

I would also settle for 14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28-32. Is there any reason
this wouldn't work? It looks to me like this could be made from a 12-25
which is available in 105 certainly.

To build this, I would need a 12-25 cassette, a 14t top position cog, and
28t and 32t flat cogs. Yes? I'll happily entertain quotes on both cassette
options, either assembled or not.

I notice that on some websites the price for a custom cassette is less
than the sum of the pieces' prices. Why is this? Are the unused parts of
the base cassette resold?

HG-50 9 speed cassettes are individual cogs which are riveted
together; drill or grind off the rivets to disassemble. I don't
know about 105. You could take a 12-25, add the 28 and 32 from
an 11-32, and a 14 top cog to make a 14-32. Or take 12-27, add
30 and 34 from an 11-34, and 14 top cog to make 14-34. The
12-2x cassette can be whatever, but the big cogs have to come
from something with individual cogs, as opposed to a group of cogs
on a spider.

105 cassettes are bolted together. I recently made a 13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32
from a LX 11-32 and a 105 13-15, both 9 speeds ones. Note I made an 8 speed
cassette to fit on a 7 speed freehub, Sheldons 8 from 9 on 7 trick. The LX
has separate sprockets and spacers which are rivetted together, the rivet
heads were filed off then punched out.

_ If you want the 27 tooth gear you have to get the ultegra
cassette. The 21-24-27 cluster is the only 27 tooth gear
shimano makes.

_ The cheapest solution for that many cogs is to generally by the
whole cassettes on sale. I'd get an tiagra(HG-50) 14-25 and an
deore (HG-50 or HG-70) 11-32 on sale. The top cogs run about $15-$20 and the individual
flat ones about $10. For the price of two cogs, you can get an
entire HG-50 or HG-70 cassette on sale.
