ya know, its funny, but I've noticed a correlation between engineering
(including programming) biking, karate, and beermaking and beer
drinking. Serious!

Howdy, Dave. I'm actually an engineer, but I impersonate a programmer
frequently. The computer can't tell the difference. Fortunately, neither can
my employer. 🙂

I too live in the Vancouver area, and might be open to a change in jobs,
though I don't know Perl. I speak C, Ada, Java and 80x86 Assembler. Computer
languages are pretty much alike, though, so I wouldn't expect Perl to be
impossible to learn.

What sort of shop is yours? Unix or Windows? What type of business (in
general)?

As far as bikes go, I'm a confirmed roadie, so we might not have much in
common aside from two wheels to talk about anyways.

Well, my wife's a programmer, but she's pretty inept mechanically.
That's not a slur on her- she'd rather ride than work on her bike.
Working on bikes is my job.

(FWIW: she's currently working at HP, twiddling bits for printer
firmware. She's also 5-foot-10, blonde, and quite pretty. Marrying her
was the single best decision I've made in my sordid life. We live in
the *other* Vancouver, the one in Washington state.)

For a while KCG was looking for a Mac guru to run their internal
network. Since the job req is no longer visible (
http://www.chrisking.com/company/comp_employment.html ), I'd guess
that the job's been filled. I applied there, but I guess 15 years in
the bicycle business isn't enough for them.

Heh. Meet your opposite. I'm a computer tech, a fairly inept programmer,
but I wrench with abandon (word chosen carefully to have both positive
and negative connotations). Current project is a 7-speed BMX, soon to be
a 21-speed BMX with the addition of a Campy triple front ring setup.

I think that's largely because you haven't tried, citing "boredom" as your
excuse. I don't think my knee is ready even for a 100 km ride yet, but I
did make it up to SFU for the first time since my injury today (on my 42x14
fixie, no less!) This was a dramatic improvement from last Wednesday, when
I only made it a little past Boundary, and had to take the bus the rest of
the way. I credit another day at the beach for the improvement.

with someone who can learn quickly and is already familiar with regexps,
etc., I'm out of the running.

My excuse for not riding farther is that I haven't trained to do it, and
my specific citation for why I race is that I have a short attention
span (though I did do an 80 km race over rolling terrain not too long
ago, so my distances are inching up very slowly).

regularly about how great the mountain biking is in BC. There is such a
plethora of programmers down here, I'd be very surprised if

I got all of that covered except Karate, I never studied any martial
art.

I haven't met many other cyclists who brewed their own beer but they
all seem to be happy to help me drink it.

One of my pet peeves is overuse of the term "engineer." Most of the
"software engineers" I met have never actually studied much software
engineering but are just good coders who are trying to get a more
impressive title than "programmer." I don't consider Field Engineers
to be engineers, they are technicians. I also don't consider most
CNE's and MCSE's to be engineers either (unless they actually went to
engineering school at some point). Even though I've done a little
work in fields lumped into electrical engineering I've never been to
engineering school and where I work when we were discussing new titles
I argued against putting engineer in everyone's title.

I've seen a more direct correlation between music and computers. Most
great musicians I met are also quite handy with computers and many of
the best computer scientists I meet are quite good musicians.
