    Dear Bow,

Cruel remarks about steel being real, unkind suggestions about the
need to x-ray for hidden damage, thoughtless comments about . . .

Oh, you meant how to saw through a carbon fiber steering tube. Sorry.

    1) Measure.
    2) Measure again.

The instructions included with carbon forks are pretty good. Measure
many times. Usually they say use a special toothless blade, with one
of those Park or equivalent headset cutter clamps. Sand with 400 grit
    afterwards.

  6. Thanks Carl and to all those that responded (in jest or otherwise) - Sorry
    about the re-post.

I'll grab the park tool and do some damage. Wish me luck.

Take it to a shop that has a special cutting guide.

I did my first one based on a long thread here using a cutoff disk on
a rotary tool. I used masking tape over the cutting area. I used
metal spacers above and below the cut line. I held the fork in the
pipe part of my vice which I covered with a scouring pad. The vice
was loosely clamped. The actual cut took about a minute and came out
    very smooth and straight.

Then I needed to go to the local shop to have them push the star nut
down in the CF tube because I didn't have the tool to do that. It was
a nut for a cf fork and hitting a screw in the center cocked the nut
    sideways in the fork.

Hmmmm. I thought all manufacturers frowned upon using a star nut in
carbon steerers? They come a an expander type device that won't damage
    the steerer.

I would be a little worried riding with that bike.

The star type nut is supplied by Cannondale with their CAAD7 and a
2004 Optimo. Cannondale tech was phoned before the nut was installed
the first time and a specific ok was given. The star nut supplied had
    only one disk.
