nope. It will snap, and even if it didn't it would be horribly
weakened.
There ARE stems with hinged or removable-face clamps that allow

Certainly NOT! without rendering the stem useless. There are new stem
designs that have removeable faceplates for this reason.

Hmmm. Let's see, a reasonably precisely-made bracket holding a vital
component that gets a lot of force, and you want to distort it *well*
beyond the point where it will return to its original shape.

No, not if you want to reuse the stem.

Get a stem with a two-bolt (or more) clamp. (I'm told that there's
one with a hinged clamp as well, but I haven't tried to verify this.)

Obviously, if you're going to install a different stem, then sure, you
can bend the bejeezus out of the old one, just make sure to place it
in the appropriate bon-bicycular receptacle afterwards.

No.
Cracked stems can be very expensive, especially if it is
only cracked a little bit and fails on the road, spilling
you to the pavement.

Tape is dirt cheap. Why risk that for five or ten bucks?

Well, then why be it? There's loads of folks who aren't "handy;" who aren't
familiar with physical relationships and properties. These newsgroups are
an excellent resource for them, as well as for those who are more
experienced.

As far as bicyclette's back pain, which is the stated reason for exploring a
new stem - maybe there's a need to go to a good LBS for a proper "fitting,"
examining the overall position on the bike (foot placement, saddle
height...).

The Look Ergostem has had mixed reviews. Some find it works well for them
for a variety of uses, others report that it is prone to slippage unless
extremely tightened, and even then some. I'd say that it's a good tool in
order to find one's optimal position, then replace with a more "permanent"
stem, if bicyclette is so inclined.

No. Pry or cut the offending stem off (carefully! Avoid damaging the
handlebar) and don't buy any more one-bolt stems until you're sure
of your position. Dispose of the now-destroyed stem.
