I think single-sided pedals are a nuisance. Besides, this one is not
compatible with Shimano SPD cleats, which is another nuisance. The NR-PDL
(2-sided) is $20 cheaper, only 70g/pr heavier, Shimano compatible. Both are
probably re-labeled Wellgos, I know the "MTB" one is, some of the Wellgos are
Shimano compatible, some aren't.

I know this question may sound stupid, but why is it important that the
pedals are SPD compatible? Is this somekind of an unofficial standard?

True Shimano SPD cleats will not fit in this pedal. But the cleats that
come with the pedal will fit in a shoe that's drilled for SPD-type cleats.

If you ever need new cleats, the Shimano version will likely be
available. If you buy a less ubiquitous brand (i.e. Nashbar),
replacement cleats may be less likely to be available a few years hence.
I don't expect this to be a problem with the pedal of interest. I had a
similar set of pedals a few years ago, and the cleats outlasted the pedals.

Not these specifically but I tried their MTB pedals. They came free with
a pair of shoes. I got what I paid for...

The tollerences were poor. they made a clicking noise against the cleat
on each rotation.

I had a pair on Nasbar pedals that also clicked out of the box.
I re-packed the bearings full of grease and they click no more and work
fine.

They are probably made by the same folks that made the old Ritchey Road
Logic pedals. The clip mechanism would be a wee bit different. I got
thousands and thousands of miles on a couple pairs of those.

SPD clones come in many subtle variants. Those that are not completely SPD
compatible may work poorly or not at all with Shimano cleats. This can be a
problem when the cleats wear out and you need replacements, or if you want to
mix different pedals with shoe/cleat combos. Finally, Shimano cleats come in
single-release and multi-release flavors, whereas the Wellgo clones typically
only provide single-release. I find it simpler just to standardize on full
Shimano compatibility since we have 10-12 family bikes (& perhaps the same
number of shoes). If you have one bike, it's not such a big deal.

The quality of Wellgo pedals isn't as high as Shimano, but neither are the
prices. I've had a couple of pedals fail when the stationary part of the clip
mechanism broke. Fortunately, this piece seems to be pretty standard across
designs, so I've cannibalized* one set of pedals to keep all the others going.
If you're going to put a lot of miles on, or ride in bad weather, I'd go with
Shimano for the durability, otherwise the Wellgos are adequate.

I've standardized on Wellgo because the quality is very good for the
price and Shimano isn't all that great. My cleats seem to work with
the remaining Shimano pedals I have.
