Bunch of young kids cycling along a canal, some as young as 4? Doesnt sound
like a good idea to me, how about finding a bridleway instead?
Reminds me of Melbourme, Australia, sunny Sunday afternoon in the late
1980s. A shared walking and cycle track right along the banks of the
Yarra River. 10 year old kid tearing along on his bmx, came up behind
a couple of pedestrians. He swerved around them into the path of a guy
on a racing bike. The second cyclist stopped quickly, no contact at
all between cyclists or peds. But the kid on bmx left the path, sailed
through the air, caught his front wheel in reeds growing at the
water's edge, and somersaulted into the water. And if you know the
Yarra River, which is famous for flowing upside down, you'll know that
wouldn't be a pleasant experience.
The kid was not really hurt but, once out of the water, he just stood
there screaming. Someone fished his bike out and that calmed him down,
5 minutes later he was racing off down the path again, just as fast as
before.
