  1. Right, brace yourself.

I'm looking for a seriously budget mountain bike for commuting and
hopefully venturing further afield in the future. When I say budget, I
mean sub 200 quid, which I realise is phenomenally tight.

I was looking at a couple of Raleigh (Motomax) and Diamonback (FS20)
models - can anyone offer any advice at all?

Also, I'm about 6ft4, is a 19" frame really going to be big enough? All
of the bikes in my price range seem to be 19" frames at the most.

I have read the FAQ and couldn't see anything stating that I shouldn't
post this, so go easy on us!

    Thanks

Blimey that was quick!! Sorry dont know anything about mountain bikes... but
it means you can buy a bike that costs twice as much as you thought (ie you
can get a £400 one for £200) so you can at least size up more expensive
bikes. For second hand you either have to decide what you want and wait or
take something that seems OK at the time but isnt exactly what you wanted,
    i'm doing the same for a tourer/hybrid.

BTW do you really mean a mountain bike, ie are you going to be doing lots of
    off-road?

Have a look in the ad-mag for a few weeks. You get plenty of very nice
mountain bikes with things like "ridden twice" in the ads. Should be spot
on. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did - buying an ex hire bike. BB was
shot, pedal bearings shot etc. Made it relatively expensive for what it was
second hand. My MTB's a Giant, and I like it. That's about as much as I know
    about different makes of bike...

Private sales are a bit of a no-go for me as I don't have transport.
I'll take a look into Giant cycles.

Thanks for the replies thus far people 🙂

It's best to go and try some out for size. A 19" frame on a full
mountain bike is about as big as you get. I just tried a 21" hybrid
which I didn't like, and ended up with a 17" (although it has a slanted
top tube, so isn't a true 17"😉 Apollo from Halfords, it was only £130,
but the choice I made was based on the bike *feeling* right.

Just be wary of the second hand stuff though. I have an old mountain
bike here that would have cost me more to update, than I just paid for a
new bike that was already fitted with the components I was about to buy.

Yeah I intend to go and try some out. Halfords stock both Raleigh &
Diamondback by the look of it, so I'd like to take a look at the two
models mentioned in my initial post. I'm leaning toward the Diamondback
FS20 because it has front disc brakes, which I'm told are a lot better.

    No problem.
You might get some help from the LCC leaflet called
    "Buying a Bike"
    Its got information on sizing.

You'll only want V brakes at this price point. I can guarantee that someone
else will pass by with an explanation of why disc brakes cost at least £200
in themselves to make properly, so I won't elaborate. But ordinary rim
brakes have all the power you need for normal use (i.e. enough to lift the
back wheel, even in the wet) unless they're exceedingly flimsy, and they're
a lot less complicated & thus cheaper, so the money will have been spent
elsewhere on other components which are compromised by price.

Cheap disc brakes are every bot as good as cheap rear suspension -
i.e. not very. V-brakes are so powerful you'll not need to worry
except in the most extreme circumstances, especially if you fit Kool
Stop pads. Discs are for serious downhill, or maybe all weather
commuting. Do not buy a bike with Magura Julie disc brakes, as they
    suck badly (DAMHIKIJKOK).

I would say the hierarchy might be:
    - last year's model of a good bike knocked down to your price band
    - a lightly-used trade-in
    - a bike from a good manufacturer (Dawes, Trek, Giant etc.) ditto

Second hand bikes in proper bike shops are rarely hopelessly out of
date, they wil be reasonably recent models on which the owner has
given som Actual Cash in trade-in. Some shops do specialise in
second-hand bikes, but those are probably not the shops you are
    visiting.

My Claud Butler Ravana (see http://www.chapmancentral.co.uk - it's the
one with the mud) cost £150 IIRC, list was £225. It was unmarked, the
bloke had ridden it twice and traded it for a full-sus thing. I've
had it for about four or five years and ridden 50 miles towing a
trailer bike on it; it currently has a couple of thousand miles under
its wheels and is still in good shape. Great value.

A cheap new bike tends to be cheap because everything on it is cheap,
especially the frame. A slightly more expensive bike will almost
always have a better frame, but cheaper components. Which you simply
replace as they wear out (if they ever do).

Also, don't forget that you'll need a few quid left over for
    essentials:
    - lights
    - lock
    - mudguards
    - rack
    - panniers
    - tools
    - waterproofs
    - gloves
    - bottle & cage

For a commuting bike a hybrid is a good choice, for a leisure bike for
sustrans paths and such a rigid MTB has a slight edge. Look for named
brand components. You'll see levers with "Shimano V-Brake" and then
the bike has Tekro brakes on it - perfectly normal, but the genuine
Shimano V-brakes are Much Better if you can find them. That sort of
thing. See if it has a rivetted chainset, or one where ou can replace
individual rings (cheap bikes are usually rivetted). Does it have
Shimano hubs and cassette? Shimano front & rear mech? Are they at
least Acera, or just "SIS" (which is, as the Sheddi would have it,
    penc[1]).

    Enough already.

    [1] The joys of ROT13.

Look on the second hand market, or save up another hundred and fifty.
There really are second hand bargains to be had, but a new bike at this
price point is unlikely to be value for money.

It Depends. Mountain bike frames are becoming increasingly 'compact' (in
other words top tubes are becoming increasingly inclined, so more
sloping (mostly newer) designs of '19 inch' bikes fit larger people
than older, less sloping designs. The only way to find out is to try
    it.

No no no no no! Do *not* buy a disk brake bike at this price point! Good
disk brakes (Hopes, for example, or Maguras) are a tiny bit better than
good V brakes, but they cost about £250 a set just for the brakes
alone. Cheap disk brakes are a lot *worse* than V brakes.

    Buy second hand.

Thanks, but that doesn't really help with the dilemma of what to buy.
    Do you have any recommendations?

Yes. If you really mean sub-£200, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op's own brand
(Cuilin range, for example) are about the cheapest reasonably well
built and specced mountain bikes available in the UK at present.

If you're buying low end bikes, go for as few features as possible -
that means that more of your money has gone into the frame. Everything
else is replaceable and upgradeable, but a bad frame is a bad frame for
the life of the bike. And remember, WEIGHT MATTERS.

Dawes do decent bikes that come in around the £400 price point new; so
do Specialized, so do Scott, so do Giant. These should hit the second
hand market at about half that. If buying second hand, particularly an
aluminium framed bike, check very carefully for any cracks in the
frame, because a cracked aluminium frame is almost always a write-off.
Check also that the wheels are true, and that all the bearings run well
    and don't rattle.

Finally, I've had some excellent bargains off eBay, but you are taking a
    bit of a risk.

  19. Thanks for all the advice thus far guys.

I thought the disc brakes thing might get some strong responses, so
that's that crossed off the list.

I'm going to take a look at a few specialist shops in my area (Coventry)
and see if there's anything about 2nd hand that's worth having. Problem
is outside of a few ridiculously small shops that are of no use,
Halfords & a hawk cycles outlet there aren't many places around.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Raleigh Motomax?

    Thanks again
