Maybe keep a heavy lock, or a big heavy chain permanently at work.
Commute with a lighter lock maybe? That's not to say a substandard lock.
Cheapo cable locks are useless.
Never, ever leave the bike unlocked in London.

It's a bit crazy in the City during the rush hour. I don't find drivers
much of a problem, but pedestrians are a problem when they don't cross the
roads at the traffic lights but wherever they want. Be careful because not
all of them see you and not all of them are friendly.

As for the crime rate, I don't know.

In days of old I used to do Stoke Newington - Bloomsbury through that area
and it didn't seem too bad, but perhaps I was young, foolish and lacking
imagination...

Since the Kengestion Charge was introduced it's been a fair bit quieter.
Though the peds are a menace to life and limb, as they all seem to assume
that:

o if the tin boxes have stopped, so has the rest of the world
o a red light means "mince across the road like John Inman's camper brother"
o crossings stretch ten yards in either direction from the markings on the
road
o newspapers work the same way as Joo Janta 200 Super Chromatic

o carrying a cup of overpriced Starmucks "coffee" will ward off bicycles,
buses, taxis, the Mighty Kawasaki and Osama bin Laden

Make sure you have good brakes...

In my experience it's worth taking the time and using the excellent CTC maps
to find a good route.
The main roads in the City are a bit manic, but is is usually possible to
find a decent cycle friendly alternative.

Re: locks, I use a long cable lock, combination, about £20 from Evans. Long
enough to go through both wheels, never have to search for, or lose, a key
