After all the encouragement and support I received here, I thought I owed you an update.
I'm now fit enough and confident enough to be able to use my bike as an alternative to the bus for travel all over Sheffield. The trick on the very steep bits seems to be to know when to admit you're beaten, get off and walk, and then there's enough energy left for the rest :-) I'll never be a sport or distance cyclist, but it's nice not to be dependent on buses or car parking, and I enjoy what cycling I do. I'm intending to take the bike with real gears to the lbc to get it checked over, so I will finally be able to lay the one with the SA hub to rest.
And I lost a couple of stone as well, though the extra exercise isn't the only reason.
Thanks to everyone here who kept me going when I was saddle sore and knackered!

Well done - that's brilliant. I know all about Sheffield's hills because when I used to go there a lot, it the one place where I found out my car's handbrake didn't work very well.

Hi Debbie,
Glad you persevered and gained the confidence to show the cagers how it should be done. Don't worry about getting fitter and faster, just keep cycling and it will happen all by itself. :-)
When you get the one with real gears going, you should find the hills a bit easier as you should then have a suitable gear available more of the time, if you see what I mean?
