Day 10 ~ Thursday 27th May 2004 ~ Rest day in Glasgow
Took the train to Glasgow for a shocking £17.50 return. Had I known this before boarding the train then I would have had second thoughts and perhaps become a train-spotter for the day until the hostel re-opened; however there was no ticket office and the train had departed. I was doomed!

Day 11 ~ Friday 28th May 2004 ~ Crianlarich to New Lanark via Glasgow (by train)
OK, I admit it. I hang my head in shame. I took my bike on the train across Glasgow.
I cycled in the rain from Crianlarich to Dumbarton, stopping off at Luss for a cheese roll, a coffee, and another cheese roll.
Along the A82 was a cycle path which had good points and bad points. The good points were that I wasn't being constantly blown about by lorries since there is a considerable gap between the path and the road. Additionally, since Loch Lomond was to my left, there were very few side roads or driveways to negotiate. It also had the advantage that it very closely followed the shoreline for the very best view. The downside was that the path was not flat: It rose up steeply to meet the roadside parking laybys and then steeply descended again afterwards.
Interestingly, I saw no signs to indicate that this was actually a cyclepath. The only indication was the occasional Give Way sign.
At Balloch the path degenerated into something more typical of a cyclepath - one that took numerous detours, and had the compulsary "Cyclists Dismount" statement. It was incorrect, since I didn't!
I didn't fancy the challenge of navigating through the Glaswegian urban sprawl, and instead took the train from Dumbarton to Wishaw.
From there I cycled to New Lanark and found the youth hostel in a newly renovated mill town next to the River Clyde.
Tomorrow I shall aim my bike at the Lowther Hills and pedal... Hopefully as far as Moffat. My map shows that a suitable B road very closely follows the A74(M).
