  1. I was just wodnering why Shimano front hubs (all of them it seems) have
10 bearings as standard but 11 fit in sooooo much more nsugly and make
even a crappy hub run much more sweetly than it ever did when it was
new. Is it common practice to strip a brand new hub down and rebuild it
with an extra bearing in each side, and better cone adjustment?

No. It's generally better to have one ball bearing fewer than will fit
snugly. Amazingly enough Shimano have got it right.

Unless, like my front hub recently, the hub has got pitted. In which case
bunging in an extra bb can force the bearings out of the pits and smooth
    it out again...

In gerneral though, Dave is right. Adjusting the cones does seem to be a
good idea on the cheaper Shimano hubs though.

But is there still a gap? You do need a gap! Otherwise you will rapidly
wear out your hubs. See http://tinyurl.com/32ws2

    Of course not.

Any basic hub can be made to run smooth and last a long time simply by
keeping it serviced and having the cones just right -- so play only just
disappears when skwer is closed (in the case of QR hubs).
