Hows about 22 x 32 or even 22 x 34, commonplace on mtbs
I'm pretty sure that we were talking road to start with.
Maybe, but is there some reason why an mtb type chainset couldn't be fitted
to a road bike?
None that I know of. The BBs are the same, but you may need a different front
mech.

choice.
I was joking but glad to hear my assertion borne out by practical
experience.
It's anecdotal. Don't get me in trouble with the URC pedant patrol who will o
over me because I failed to eliminate the effects of wind speed/direction,
humidity, diet etc etc.
Quoted message said:I don't imagine wind resistance having much effect at the low speeds
associated with those kinds of ratios but would think the tyres, boingy
frame, extra weight and psychology of climbing on tarmac with an mtb would
have quite an effect.
The tyres are a big factor, even though I pumped them up to 65psi which is much
harder than I run them offroad.
Wind resistance is significant at anything over about 10 mph. Not dominant
perhaps, but significant.
My boingly frame is a URT which is set up *properly* and my pedalling style is
smooth and high cadence. I don't bounce on either bike.
The extra weight is a pain, about 12 or 15 lbs.
The psychology is affected by the availability of much lower gears so that one
goes slower and slower, maintaining cadence by shifting down. On the road bike
one maintains cadence by getting out of the saddle at times and maintaining
forward speed.
The somewhat diffent riding position seriously affects that last choice.
