Oh good; someone else has brought this up. I don't know about you
guys, but I know a bit about pro cycling... as much as any fairly up
to date fan who has been following through cyclingnews, magazines
and... cough... SBS's world sport for about five to ten odd years.
I have noticed that Mike Tomalaris does not know Jack [censored] about pro
cycling. He is dumb as a spud when it comes to all things two wheeled.
Really, it is cringe time when he is given the opportunity to
interview people like Lance Armstrong etc (he actually asked a few
years ago if Lance was worried about Stuie O'Grady RE GC contention
when Stu was in yellow). I could go on for a while (he suggested Stuie
was getting old, to his face, last year... tactful...) but I won't
(maybe I have) because it's obvious to me that SBS's self professed
'cycling expert' Mike Tomalaris knows nothing about this sport.
I know, I know, they're the only network who will touch the sport
(please, channel ten, surely the TDU and Bay Classic aren't enough),
but if you look at their coverage of world football (live matches from
Europe a couple of times a week and six odd hours every Sunday) we get
pretty screwed over with coverage of World Cup races a month after the
fact (vaguely interested fans find out results much earlier; what's
the point?) and a twenty three or four minute update a day of TDF -
with that smug, useless, tactless, knowledgeless PRAT Mike Tomalaris
using up about five of those minutes proving just how little he has to
contribute to the sport... Live stages are cool, but compared to live
soccer, we get stuff all.
This is aimless, sure, but I have a bit of dissatisfaction with the
way SBS cover their cycling... sorry. The Track Worlds have been great
to see, but have you noticed how dodge the coverage has been? We
regularly miss parts of races through ads (on SBS!) and crappy
Tomalaris "interviews", and even Les seems lost.
I'm sure I have a point, maybe - just cranky for a few years and it's
all come out. I'll ride tomorrow.. maybe it'll be better then... No,
I'll just watch the coverage from the Worlds and get crankier...
