want to buy home compressor for spray jobs........seen them as cheap as $100 to max buget $450 can i get a resonable one in this price range.. cheaper the better how ever want to do a good job as amature spray jobs go.... sprayed only once before about 22 years ago........ what are the min features to look for......
I bought a $200 one from Bunnings. It's 2.5HP, and made by TradeAir. I also bought a TradeAir touch-up gun (~$50), and a combined water trap/regulator (~$30), as well as assorted fittings and a hose, which probably came to another $60 odd. I also spent about $100 on a decent respirator and cartridges.
I found that worked pretty well. The compressor is plenty big enough for painting bike frames. My only complaint with it is that it's rather noisier than I'd have liked (don't want to annoy the neighbours).
I used two pack polyurethane enamel paint on my bike, which is mega toxic but wonderfully tough.
What is the water trap/regulator for??? sound about what im after...... what cfm rating is it
thanks bg

When you compress air, you force the humidity(water) out of it. You do not want this in the paint coat (bubbles, discolouration, blockages, etc). So you need a water trap to collect moisture before it gets to the spray gun.
The regulator is just a tap to adjust air flow (and or pressure?).

From memory, I think it was 12cfm
The water trap simply reduces the amount of water in the air line. Whe air is forced out of a nozzle (like the end of a spray gun) water i the air condenses into droplets, which is no good when you're painting An air trap is simply a little clear plastic bowl, which the air fro the comresoor expands into before it reaches the gun. Much of th moisture in the air collects in the trap rather than getting mixed i with your paint
The regulator simply sets the air pressure that you're spraying at. I gives you another knob to fiddle with to get the air/paint mix right, s you get good gloss
Ta Suzy thanks for the link to your bike....... sounds like what i need.....may have to make a small booth to hide the compressor in may be see how it goes..

I'm looking for the same thing. My advice is buy the best you can. Belt driven is better. Make sure it has more power than you need but not so large you can't use it the way you want. Most people who buy one say they end up using for far more than they intended. I would also buy a good brand from a good shop. Many of the cheaper ones are rated a max figure that is never really achieved. Any good tool shop such as a Glenfords should be able to give you advice and recommendations even if you are not going to purchase. I've even had them find a customer who used them everyday so they could ask him what he thought I should get. You might also find one with dual outlets to be useful.
