I have an old MTB that used to be a commuter, but now I live 50km from
where I work it's been hanging on the garage wall for a while.
Trouble is... the Acera X thumbshifters don't.
It's not the first time, I recall after a period of rest they failed to
shift once before, leaving it stuck in first gear. Got a lot of
spinning practice riding that uphill to the LBS!
So... what is the cause, and how easy is it to fix? I suspect it's
gummed up lube inside the shifter housing? I'm a bit wary of taking
the shifters apart to see, memories of long ago trying that on an old 10
speed as a kid and having springs and things go everywhere!
I just want a reliable hack to take me places that are close enough to
cycle to that I now use the motorcycle for. And otherwise to hang from
its hook and wait. Without sulking and refusing to change gears.
