  1. My hybrid came with 700x38 tyres. I want narrower ones. The closest I ever
come to being off-road is the gravel bike path around Albert Park Lake. I
see that road tyres go down as far as 700x20, although I don't think I've
seen a reference to a hybrid with narrower than 700x28. How narrow
could/should I realistically go? What specific brands/models would people
    recommend?

barbarous torture in gloating detail is considered indicia of religious

It's probably down to personal preference for you.

If you're frame can take 700Cx38, then it can take
anything smaller than 38 I assume.

THe big difference will probably be comfort.

I just put ~28mm slicks on my MTB and it's about as
comfy as my road bike now. But it goes a lot quicker
    than it did before 🙂

BTW, why do you want narrower tyres?

I've been reading some more and it's not so much about the frame as the
width of the rim. See http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html#width.

Because I want the higher pressures and reduced rolling resistance of
narrower tyres. The ones that came with the bike are Chin Shen, so they're
[censored] anyway, and run a recommended 50-75psi.

I was thinking about something along the lines of the Michelin Dynamic
    semi-slick in a 700-28. See
    http://cycleus.webmichelin.com/tires/dynamic.htm. Minimal sniping and not
too expensive (street price is around $29), but I'm open to suggestions.

The Michelin looks fine. Conti also make the SportContact in a 700c 28mm, but
    that's around $40 each.

Don't forget, you may need smaller tubes for these tyres. Check the size
on your current tubes to see if they'll be ok.

Oh...and you may need a new pump to get close to 100psi 🙂

I'm having trouble finding that one. Google keeps bringing up car tyre

My Blackburn Airstick is supposed to be good for 160+psi. Mind you, my arm

Buy a Hybrid. Ya get the worst of both worlds! Once you own one you too can
    ask pathetic questions on Usenet!

Thanks, but unless I'm misreading the chart the only two 700 (622) options
    are 32 and 37.

    120 psi & comes in 700 x 25 or 28

I have a shogun Metro and I use IRC Road Winner II 700C X 28 tyres.
They are only marginally wider than the rim and seem to operate
without problems. I would be reluctant to go any narrower.

The Sport 1000 is even cheaper than the Michelin Dynamic but doesn't get
very good ratings from Contintal themselves. The Ultra Gatorskin looks
    seriously nice at around $45.

I have yet to establish the exact width of my rims but I suspect I'd be in
the same situation, with 28 being the narrowest practical width. In any
event, the IRC Road Winner II 700x28 is seriously light at 260g! How well
    do they wear?

I run Continental Top Touring 2000 700 x 28 on Velocity Aero rims on m
hybrid and have never had a puncture yet. Although they are heavy, ther
are still fast and a very durable and great for commuting

Your rim size will dictate how far you can go down in width, see Sheldo

I wandered into Cecil Walker's in town this morning and had a very
interesting chat with one of the staff about tyres and stuff. One of the
things that came up was the apparent polarisation between those Continental
users (with particular reference to Ultra Gatorskin riders), who love them
dearly on one side and those who despise them utterly on the other. His
opinion, having ridden various Contis for many thousands of kilometres over
the years, was that in general if you keep the pressure right up at around
120psi then Conti's are virtually bullet-proof but the moment you let their
pressure drop to around 100psi, which will happen in only a few days and
certainly less than a week, they are highly puncture prone. If too many
people were not paying close enough attention to their pressures then that
would explain the huge discrepancy in opinions, and he only half-jokingly
suggested that the recommended pressure for Contis should be 120psi -
    120psi.

When I asked him about IRC he favoured the Tandem 700x30 Duro over the Road
    Winner II 700x28 Duro. Although it's a touch heavier (375g v 290g), its
shape means you actually ride on a narrower centre strip. Food for thought.

He liked the Top Touring 2000, although at 430g for the bl/bl 700x28 I'm not
necessarily convinced. However, his pick for my hybrid was the Schwalbe
    Marathon (
    http://www.schwalbe.com/index.pl?bereich=produkte&einsatzbereich=4&produktgruppe=5&produkt=97&details=203 )
.. At 510g, though, it's even heavier than the Top Touring 2000 and more
expensive to boot ($44 versus $35) and I'm not sure about that reflective
strip on the sidewall. But it has an extraordinary pressure range,
    55-115psi.

Interestingly, I can't find a review of the Michelin Dynamic anywhere.

I popped into Penny Farthing Cycles yesterday to check out their tyres and
they're rather keen on Vittoria. The Zaffiro road tyre now comes in a
700x28 (350g), or there's the Randonneur "double shielded" (490g). Vittoria
seem a tad expensive though, presumably because they're Italian. Does
anyone have an opinion on these tyres?
