Hi, I live in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, just after some feedback o some of the better bike shops in old Sydney Town. I can't say I'm overl impressed with my lbs. I am prepared to travel. I am after bits an pieces to upgrade my rig (02 trek 5200/ultegra 9sp) - for exampl stem/seatpost, all things carbon!! I would prefer somewhere tha actually has some items in stock, not just in a catalogue. I understan that there are millions of bike parts out there, but my lbs doesn't see to stock anything!!! Oh btw, are there any cyclists in Sydney or is thi an all VIC forum??? cheers shan

I don't live in Sysdney, but regarding your comments I'd like to give you my own perspective. It's true that not all LBSs are the same. I agree that some have a more extended range in stock. But still, when you're after specialised items such as carbon stems, it starts to get tricky. Shops tend to stock items that they sell frequently. Specialised items are usually left for ordering. Unfortunately, this is the way many things work in a relatively small market.

I was looking to upgrade my worn out RSX 8-speed to Ultegra 9s. I received a quote for 2003 Ultegra from a (well known) centrally located bike shop that was outrageous - about $2000 + another $250-300 to install. I said I'd call them... ultimately, I purchased the bits from cecil walker online for closer to $1300 and installed myself.
If you know what you want and don't need to be fitted, buying online is a better bet (in my opinion).
Now isn't that interesting....my LBS gave me a quote to buy an Ultegra grouppo minus hubs for only A$1200....they'd probably charge me next to knicks (if anything) to put it on as well. I thought that was a pretty good price.
I buy from my LBS when I can. But this all depends on the difference. ie new Cassette and chain from LBS A$155.00 where I could have gotten them off of eBay for A$120.00 + wait 2-3 weeks for delivery. Yes there was a saving to be made but you have to buy from your LBS sometimes otherwise they'd never be able to survive, then where would you be? I also get great service from them....nothing is ever to much trouble.

but, I guess Wooly's Wheels is probably what you are looking for.
caveat, I'd never shop there because they don't sell my type of bicycle and they a re not a lbs for me.
Wooly's get a thumbs up from me because if they don't have stuff in stock, they'll get it in quickly and give me a ring (plus they're friendly). And they give discounts to bike club and BNSW members (not all Eastern Suburbs BSs do).

I've just ordered an Ultegra groupset (minus hubs) from Parker International for GBP306 (the ex-VAT price) - after adding freight (say GBP30), GST @ 10%, and import duty @ 5%, this works out to about $930. I'm happy to wait a couple of weeks to save $270 or so...
P.S. I suggest you don't order from www.cyclingbargains.com, even if their web site lets you. They took my payment, then after about four weeks told me they didn't ship overseas any more (saying the paperwork was too time-consuming), then refunded my payment. In the meantime, the exchange rate changed the wrong way and I lost money on the deal, not to mention the $10 foreign currency processing fee that ANZ charged me both times.

Hi, I live 5 minutes from there, and actually checked Cheeky Monkey out the other day. Some nice bikes there, but more tri than road based imho. Felt sorry for them being new and all, so bought a couple of race tyres. Gee I'm a nice guy.
