  1. Got my first pair of clipless today...and now I have a couple questions.

    1. The pedals I have are SPD and they came with a couple different brackets. When I put the cleat on my shoe, there is a thin metal plate that looks like it goes around the holes, between the cleat and the shoe. The diagram that came with the shoes doesn't show this plate being used. Should I use it?

    2. The shoes I ordered are slightly too large..not quite a full size but more like between 1/2 and one full size. How do I want the shoes to fit? I'll send these back so I can get ones that fit correctly? Do these shoes stretch out after a while?

    3. My cleats pop out pretty easy from the pedals. How easy should they come out?

    4. When I clip in, how should I correctly do it, back first then front? Or front to back?

If anyone can drop me some tips or tricks...that'd be great! Thanks.

  2. Any help here? Thanks.

  3. I don't have any experience with SPD pedals, but I will give it a shot.

    1. I believe that the plates are for use with shoes that have a curved cleat mounting surface. If you mount the cleats (which need to be perfectly flat to work) on a curved surface, and then tighten down the mounting bolts, you will effectively change the shape of the cleat. Check out the soles of your shoes and see if the cleat mounting area is perfectly flat. If not, add the plates under either side (I think) of the cleat, and then bolt them onto your shoes.

    2. Your shoes should fit good, but not tight. Try using an insole in them--either pull the current insole out and adding one you would buy and see how they fit. If they are still too loose, you can use both insoles and see how that works. If the size difference is really noticeable, and you know that the next size down would fit better, that would be the way to go (keep in mind though that many place won't exchange shoes if they can tell cleats have been mounted on them).

    3. This could be because the are curved instead of staying flat. You may also have pedals with adjustable release tension, so you can look at the paperwork that came with the pedals and see how to do that. Even at the lightest tension, you should have no problems with "accidental releases".

    4. Clipping in is usually accomplised by putting the toe of the cleat in first. If you notice, on the pedals, the retention device is usually located at the back of the pedal, and this is the part that moves to allow release and clip-in. If you clip in with the back of the cleat first, you will never be in securely. Point your toe down, "hooking" the front edge of the pedal (where the cleat inserts into the pedal), and then put pressure on the back of the pedal to fully clip in.

Hope this all helps. Good luck!!

    1. The first time I didn't use it, when I bought new cleats, I did. I haven't noticed any difference.

    2. You want your shoes to fit snuggly b/c they will strech out after awhile. Mine were uncomfortable at first ( a good uncomfortable), then they broke in. LOVE THEM NOW.

    3. If you are new to the cleats, I would leave them as be. You'll want to get out of them pretty quickly if you are about to fall over. Eventually you can tighten them. However, I have been riding clipless for about 3 to 4 years now and have only tighten the cleats minimally (sp). If the shoes are unclipping just while you are riding (not twisting your ankles) then you should probably tighten the cleats some..

    4. Front to back

On the tricks part.... Practice getting in and out of the cleats. That's a trick in itself.

  5. I can only add one new point here. CHECK THE CLEAT MOUNTING BOLTS OFTEN.

It is NO fun to get out of a pedal when the cleat rotates on the shoe!
(been there, done that, got the T-shirt) :eek

  6. Hey, I went in today to 3 different places and tried on some more shoes. I know I need a size smaller. I ordered a pair of 44's in the same model I have so that should be better. Saleman showed me how to adjust the cleat and the pedal too. My shoes don't unclip by themselves they just come out easier than I thought...I'll leave them like this until I get used to them.

  7. Just curious...what kind of shoes did you get?
