I had a Joe Blow and couldn't get it to work right. Defective I think.
Anyway I exhanged it at REI for the more expensive Serfas fmp 200 which
seems to be exceptionally well made and works like a charm.

On the other hand, I also have an inexpensive, no name, no pressure gauge,
schrader only floor pump that has worked perfectly for 15 years. I paid
something like $12 for it back then.

Then there's the Silca floor pump that will last for as long as you can get
rebuild kits for it. They have been a standard for many years, but I
haven't seen one for sale in some time now.

I have two floor pumps that now work great:

- Blackburn TP-3, which I keep at home
- Topeak Joe Bloe Pro, which I keep at work

Both had initial problems with the combo valve heads that both companies
replaced quickly when I e-mailed them complaints. My only hesitation on
recommending either one is that you should check for initial defects
like I had:

The TP-3 came with the wrong rubber gasket (?) for Presta valves, so it
was essentially Schrader on both ends of the twist head. They sent me a
whole new hose assembly without asking for a receipt, serial#, anything,
just my mailing address. I had bought a Topeak Smarthead conversion kit
in the mean time though because the local Performance shop had them on
super blow out sale, and I'm using that with the Blackburn pump now.

The Joe Blow Pro worked great for a few days, then the screw-on cap on
the head broke (stripped threads couldn't take the force when engaging
the lever lock). Topeak sent me a new head assembly without asking for
a receipt, serial# anything, just my mailing address.

The TP-3 (and other Blackburn pumps, I think) pumps faster, but takes
more force per stroke.

The Topeak Smarthead works well for adapting to both valve types without
any conversions needed. One possible gotcha with the Smarthead is that
the lock lever can "bite". It's pinched my thumb at least twice. Ouch!

I also use the TP-3 with the Smarthead conversion at home also for
topping off my car tires. The Smarthead is long and compact so it lets
me get in even on car tires with short valve stems and hub caps.

Isn't the classic Silca floor pump Presta-only out of the box, and do
Schraders only with an additional adapter/chuck?

exclusively and want I quality pump I can rely on for reliable, long-term

We are using a Joe Blow floor pump with two heads from Schrader and Presta.
It works very well.

My Silca came with a dual presta/schrader head. You have to unscrew the
chuck and reverse the internal pieces. I just looked at coloradocyclist.com
and they still sell the pumps and have the rebuild kits too. Silca frame
pumps (with campy heads) and Silca floor pumps are a must have for retro
types. And yes I have both. The chrome finished frame pump is on a chrome
plated 1978 Schwinn Paramount touring bike. Pretty cool stuff if you are
into the retro thing, which is something I like in addition to recumbents.

This reminds that I should order some rebuild kits because the old Silca
isn't working right now.
