I would speculate that since that chain is running under tension, it will
not be slapping around like on a deraileur system... and I've never seen
oil splash from a chain... if that happens to you, you're running too much
oil and you need to wipe it down with a rag.

I also would like to echo the comments of Slacker (I think it was he), that
it's nice to see Nicolai finally built a nice looking bike! It actually
looks ridable... hell, I bet I could even ride it.

You're right about the chain tension, but that's still pretty crazy,
IMHO. I know my Turner throws dirts, rocks, small fury animals, well
just about anything that has the unfortunate pleasure of getting run
over by me :-) , up into the chain and rear wheel. It's unbelievable
just how dirt gets thrown up by the longer travel bikes & aggressive
tread tires.

Although, the front cog is well protected, so maybe it's not as much a
problem with the Nicolai. But still, I wonder about the heat that chain
is going to see over time? Lotta heat and dirt can't be a good thing,
but want do I know, I aint no Germany engineer.

Actually, now I seem to recall someone bringing up this subject before
?? but don't remember the answer... maybe it's just quickie prototype
rear hub and the production ones well be reversed??

But the real questions is the black thing on the downtube ;-)

It looks lie a "magic box" for high-ratio pulleys. We use 'em on boats for
getting a lot of mechaanical advantage with little movement. Maybe the
internal BB shifting needs oomph over a short throw?

Or maybe they left the housings off the cables for a bit to save weight, and
that thing is to protect them from dirt? ;-P

Agreed, it is neat. I rode a BMW with that dual-chain transmission
gimmick, and it felt pretty good. Keeping the rotating weight off the
rear wheel, and allowing for more width between the hub flanges makes
the over-engineering interesting. Not that I'm planning on plunking
down my hard-earned...

Even with a chain cover, I wouldn't touch it.

I'm too clumsey/sloppy when oiling my chains....

Also, when removing/replacing the rear wheel there's plenty chance for the chain
to rub up against the rotor.

Doh! It's right there in grey and white. The only thing that can ruin that
bike's looks is a nerdy chain guard like the ones you had on your bike as a

Not that much tension in this case... the rear wheel seems to pivot around
the gearbox, which acts as the pivot point... chain tension should be
relatively high and not sagging in the photos.
