OT: Agent Newsreader

I used FA for a couple years, and liked it better than OE, but it takes
getting used to, and tinkering with it, until you get it the way you like
it. Since I don't post nearly as much as I have in the past, I've not
installed it since my last reformat.

OK. Probably the odd man out but I've never had a problem with OE. I've
tried the others such as agent, xnews, newspro, and newsrover but I always
go back to OE. However, if I'm sucking files down the net I always use
newsrover

OE works for me, and having come from Agent, haven't found one thing OE
doesn't do when it comes to reading and responding to posts(I don't do
binaries, so that's a non-issue.)

Only if you're dumb enough to open it. In that case, you deserve it. Also,
if you are using a computer and do not have a virus scanner that will scan a
file before it is opened, you should be taken off life support.

I've been using Agent for close to 10 years. I suppose what works is
what you're used to because OE is the program that seems like junk and
hard to work with for me.

As far as retrieving messages, I use the mouse, not the keyboard, and
am unfamiliar with the "Press Enter to Retrieve"

The hardcore newsreaders are nice but I never find the benifits to
outweigh the learning curve. I've been using Mozilla Thunderbird and
love it, way more (useful) features than OE and just as easy to use.

Don't even get me started on how much better Firebird is over IE, I
absolutly cannot use IE anymore.

The point is, there was nothing attached. I posted plain text, it's just
that your newsreader chose to interpret it as a .scr file. Just one of the
many great features of OE...

AV is for people that ARE dumb. If you know what you are doing, the chance of
getting a virus is ridiculously low. But then again the chance of you knowing
what you are doing and using OE for news is also ridiculously low.

Blaster changed all the rules, all you have to do is plug your computer
into the cloud and BAM! There are plenty of viruses out there now that
can zap you with little or no user intervention.

You don't have to be an idiot to get infected these days.

Indeed! Firefox kicks ass, I use tabs constantly, its a great way to read
forums and browse links on a site. It helps to learn the KB shortcuts too,

I use Free Agent and love it. I also liked XNews. With Outlook I would
hardly get any headers. My browser and e-mail are Mozilla but the
newsreader doesn't display correctly. In my case Outlook didn't work
well so I use Free Agent. As for the interface, that is a matter of
personal preference. Like Doug Taylor I browse with the mouse so the
having to press enter to retreive the message does not bother me.
However, when I first started using it I was used to browsing with the
keyboard and having to press enter to retrieve drove me nuts.

[censored] happens man, ESPECIALLY if you're running windows. And yes, a lot of
that [censored] slips right by most firewalls - my school is behind a firewall,
plus filters email for viruses (viri?) being sent in, and has mandatory
updates that you need to install every month or so or they kick you right
off the network - and we still get tons of 'em through every year.

"I won't get a virus without antivirus because I'm smart enough not to click
on anything suspect" is like saying "I won't get STDS by having unprotected
sex because I'm smart enough not to stick my pecker in anything suspect".

a friend of mine is having trouble with something like that.
There's also Spybot Search and Destroy, which I used in conjunction with
Adaware, and then there's a new one called "bazooka"... any one have any
experience with that piece of software?

You need to change your security settings. You're allowing unkown
ActiveX controls to be installed without prompting.

At work 40% of our cases are Spyware/URL Hijackers/Popups but our
developers won't let us lock down IE, and our DNS admin is too lazy to
blackhole known spyware sites.

Try Hijack This. Don't fix anything unless you know for a fact it
shouldn't be on your machine. Instead of looking for known spyware like
Adaware or Spybot, Hijack This looks for common ways for spyware to be
run on your system, like the Run key in the registry, etc. At work it
picks up several of our utilities so I have to pay attention to what I'm
removing but it has always fixed things that Adaware and Spybot miss so
I've stopped using those.

It's funny how no one in IT at work gets infected with Spyware even
though we don't have IE locked down, one would think that we would be
the ones going to sites that [censored] our systems up but it's not the case.

No, but be careful with Spybot, upon removing a couple of different
pieces of spyware it will corrupt the winsock2 key in the registry
leaving you without the ability to use most network apps like a browser
or email until you either fix the winsock2 key by deleting the winsock2
key, uninstalling TCP/IP, rebooting, then reinstalling TCP/IP. There
are also a couple of utilities on the net that repair the winsock2 key
but I haven't tested them yet, I just quit using Spybot instead.

No, but it sounds like a respected tool. We get about 10 or 12 spyware
cases a day so I'll give it a shot this week at work. No spyware here
to test it on since I'm on Mac OS X.

So far at work we've used Adaware, Spybot S&D, PestPatrol, and Hijack
This extensively along with our own homegrown PestCleaner script.
