yes
It'll work, but it's outside specs.

Of course only a top poster would think that tubes are all manufactured
to the same sizes.

Yes but don't try using something like 26 x 1.5 in a 26
x 2.35 or bigger.

Yes, but the tube walls will be somewhat thinner, and more prone to
puncture. Nothing to lose sleep over, but a good reason to run the
"right size" tubes if you can get 'em.

Mark has opened the door. Who's smart enough to tell us: How much
thinner is it?
I'm loosing sleep.

Well 2.1 compared to 1.5 is roughly 7/10 so the tube will be 7/10 the
thickness of whatever the hell that is.

Google reveals standard MTB inner tubes have a wall thickness of .8mm, so a
1.5 inner tube in a 2.1 tyre will only be 0.57mm thick, less than the
thickness of super-lightweight time trial inner tubes (.6mm)...

Steve, I hope that your not at work doing all of this research ;-) Me,
I'm home with a back spasm.

btw I don't agree with the 7/10 calculation. Not that I know the answer
;-)
Yes 1.5 is @ 7/10 of 2.1 but does it stretch and thin out 30%?

Considering the lack of consistency amongst tube manufacturers that's
not going to be a big issue in this case. As, I think, crazywebtver
mentioned, you wouldn't want to run a 26 x 1.25/1.5 tube in a 26 x 2.5
tire but Scott Smith's combo shouldn't be a problem at all.

Except that it's not a 1.5, it's a 1.5/2.0 so who knows the actual size.

Assuming the tubes are actually crafted for those two actual sizes
(1.5" and 2.1"😉 that would be a fairly good assumption.
Only it gets more complicated by the fact that the more a tube
stretches, the less consistent it is - there will be "thin spots" that
are even thinner than the 0.57mm (or whatever the "average" is).
Again, probably not enough to cause widespread flooding and hail, but
something else to consider. That could actually matter when there's a
nasty little thorn trying to poke through the tube.

This is my job, I trawl newsgroups looking for simple mathematical problems
