Kryponite chains/locks?

Heya Slack. Allow me to offer my opinion on this matter. First, and most
importantly, if you care about your bike you will not let it out of your
sight. I had a $600 GT Zaskar I left at ASU during one of my finals
(locked up with the 3' Kryptonite Chain with EV Disc Lock)... I came out...
it was gone, no trace of theft. No lock is burly enough to stop a thief
that wants your ride.

Having said that, if you must choose a lock, go with that $139.95 lock. It
has a much nicer U lock at the end of it which, according to Kryptonite, is
impervious to picking. The $89.97 lock you are pointing at is the same
model (except mine was shorter) that was defeated, I suspect, by a picked
lock.

My thinking is... why would Kryptonite come out with a lock that is touted
as "pick proof" if they didn't have a problem with their previous
generation being picked? I'm almost certain that is what happened to mine,
since there was no evidence of a broken or sawed lock at the scene of the
crime.

Hey, thanks. This is just to lock it up inside my apartment while I'm at
work. Any other times, the thing doesn't leave my sight.

Sheesh, I was worried about the chain getting cut. Didn't really think
about the lock getting picked... didn't know that was a problem.
Hopefully, the thieves in my complex aren't that complex.

I give thumbs down on Kryptonite, for replacement and service.

I give and big thumbs up to master locks, street Cuffs set, service was
awesome after kryptonight, they called my the day after my bike got stolen
*sunday* They offered me a lock at great cost and warenttee, better then
krypto..

Oh, and to answer your original question... those Kryptonite New York Chains
you spotted are definitely the toughest locks commercially available for
bikers. I also recommend renter's insurance... it's about $10 a month if
you're living in a standard apartment, and will cover your bikes if your
place is looted.

We just did the same thing here at home. We live in an apartment and our
managers recently changed. The new manager isn't home all day like the old
one was, so even though we live in a decent neighborhood, we don't trust it
with our bikes.

We have 2 wall racks in the "Bike Room", which we cable/U lock all the bikes
to during the day while we're out. I figured the actual quality of the lock
was of no matter since if someone were inside the apartment they'd have
plenty of time to get around the locks by whatever means necessary. They are
more of a visual deterrant than anything else. We figured if someone were
here to rob the place they'd pass by anything that would give them any sort
of trouble and move on to easier pickings like the change jar, jewelery,
etc. Plus any non bike specific thief may not be as likely to know how
easily ANY cable or kryptonite lock is to get around, or how much more
valuable the bikes are than anything else in the place.

We also took on a renters insurance policy and made sure our bikes and
computers were all covered.
