I've currently got Kenda Crosscountry tyres, which are what Giant stuck on the bike when they made it AFAIK. These tyres are steel beaded and whenever I go anywhere vaguely muddy they clog very quickly, and the mud doesn't come back out of the tread until I've been riding home on the road for a few miles.
Any ideas on a decent tyre that's reasonably light (kevlar bead?), and will give me good grip in muddy conditions (seem to be the only kind you get in Derbyshire :P).

Yes. I'm not familiar with your Kendas, but generally speaking Kevlar beads are a good deal lighter than steel (though I'm sure there are SOME steel-bead tires that are lighter than SOME Kevlar-beeded ones)...

The problem is that tyres that are specifically designed for mud tend to suck at every other discipline. Taking a tarmac corner on mud tyres is something that will scare the pants off you. Have a look for a general tyre with wider spacing between the knobbies. Conti Vert or Survival pros might be good, or the Panaracer Trailrakers, which were designed with UK conditions in mind.

Kevlar bead plus copious mud on bike = heavy bike anyway. Kevlar won't hurt but if it's purely weight savings you're after it's probably not as big an issue as you might think.

Yes, rotating mass does make a difference. And Yes, a mud-shedding tread will be even better. And a tyre that has more traction AND sheds mud AND has a kevlar bead will be just about damn perfect. What I'm saying is that it will be the mud that makes the major difference. Not the bead weight or the rotating mass. It seemed from what you were saying originally that you are placing an unreasonable significance on the weight of the bead alone. I agree. But a lighter tyre is A Good Thing IMO. It's also a pretty easy way to drop a pound or two off the bike.
