The only negative I've heard about Avid mechs is that if the pigtail on the
cable is too long it can jam the brake and cause a crash.

I have the Avids on one bike and Hope C2s on another. The Hopes really are
better for a front brake - but they cost a lot more and the Avids are still
pretty good. Good enough that I think I'm going to switch to an Avid on the
rear of each bike to take advantage of Avid's super-easy caliper alignment
    system when swapping wheels.

I don't think the best and cheapest come in the same box

That's for sure. I do have several buddies though that are riding Deore
hydraulics and are really happy with them. I think that could pretty close
to the best value brakes today.

I've got a pair of Tektros and i've noticed that the same would happen also
if the cable got in the way, (it was cured by slightly bending the cable out
    the way of the disc.)

Ok then, the best budget hydraulic disc brake. 😉

I had some ProMax hydraulics on my DS bike, and I loved them. They had
great power, good feel, and were really pretty cheap. Surprisingly good
    brakes.

That's really the great part about Avids. Set-up is so easy - so much
easier than Vs, and they are just plain inexpensive. Replacement
parts are easy to come by, and everybody and their dog sells them on
    eBay.

The pigtail issue really isn't one if you follow the directions. 20mm
max (IIRC) from the fixing bolt; I run mine at 15mm. I like Hayes
hydraulics, but some folks have troubles with them. I never did, but
maybe I'm lucky. Avids are fantastic for the money, and damn near
    idiot-proof.

Go to the above site and check out the product reviews. Anyone can
write a review and amazingly the site works really well. I used it to
check out disc brakes before I bought some and am glad I did. Of
course there are a few reviews that are written by people that have a
vested interest in the product they review, but you can usually spot
them and they get overwhelmed by real reviews anyway.

  15. Notice everyone likes the disc brake they have best. Of course they
have only tried one or two and have learned to live with the one they
have. Never settle on advice from a person that is only familiar with
    one product.

I have had Shimanos, both the 556 Deores and the first XT 4 cylinder
brakes. Work well but I have to constantly f%&^ around with them to stop
them rubbing. I don't think the rubbing affects performance but the sound
drives me insane on long, smooth descents.

I shim, re-centre the pistons, use the coke can trick, pray to Allah and
things are good for a ride or two, then the god damned dragging starts
again and my language deteriorates. God help me if I remove a wheel and
put it back on. That invaraibly seems to cause the rubbing noise, even if
I screw around with the tension on the QR lever.

It has me mystified. Any ideas?

But to answer the original question, my Shimanos work well and are
consistent. Discs are definitely the way to go on Canada's west coast.
And if I ride with a walkman, earplugs, or my wife complaining, I don't
    notice the brake noise.

My buddy has Hayes hydraulics and has similar complaints, but he's not as
finnicky as me so it doesn't bother him. I just hate funny noises.

BTW if you get the Shimanos and the noise does bother you, you can borrow
my wife for 1 million dollars. OK, how about 10 dollars? OK, just the
    cost of shipping....

You sound like me, as I suspect your brakes sound like mine. Is the coke
can trick similar to the playing card trick? I have to remove my front
wheel to get my bike in my truck, so I fiddle with my front brake
constantly too (Shimano Deore 525). They seem to get less finicky as the
pads wear down for some reason.

Yes, I think the coke can trick is the same as the card trick. It's all
witch craft. Even when the LBS fixes the brakes, they end up the same way
after a few rides. You interested in the wife? She's glaring at me right
now..... Maybe I need to face my brake mounts? None of the LBSs in my
town seem to own the tools to do this though.

I really think the problem is that the calipers simply do not consitantly
return to the same spot when the lever is released. I've often done the
pad centering thing...loosening the caliper mounting screws, squeezing the
brake, then retighting the screws. That should center the calipers on the
rotor and allow both pads to move clear evenly when the lever is released.
Usually that adjustment will work, but often it doesn't, and it seems like
one pad stubbornly refuses to move far enough away from the rotor.

The brakes do seem to work just fine in their actual purpose, though.

Sorry, I meant the pistons, not calipers.
