I'm looking for some recommendations as to what bike I should buy. I want a mountain bike but I'm unfamiliar with the latest technologies and reliability of various brands. I haven't ridden a bike in earnest since I turned 16 (8yrs) and that was mostly BMX stuff.
I want to get back into it for transportation purposes around my urban/suburban surroundings. I don't need anything too fancy, I don't plan to go off road for any length of time. I just want something agile, light, comfortable.
If anyone has suggestions as to makes or models I should look consider, or specific technologies (suspension, brakes, hubs etc.) I should consider or avoid, I would be very appreciative.

I'd be tempted to say not a mountain bike, or perhaps a hybrid. Big mudguards make a big difference when it suddenly pisses it down when you're on the bike. You don't really need any suspension on a bike that's going to be used only on the road.
