What kind of fork? AFAIK, some of them have replaceable steerer tubes.

Measure twice, cut once. And don't slip when cutting ;-)

Weld it back together? Maybe some superglue might work. Oh, oh, masking
    tape for sure!

ChiPpY, what did you do?!? (This wasn't on the Blur, was it?)

I *think* Sheldon has posted a fix for this in the past -- possibly a
stem-raiser thingy (technical term) -- so check out his site (or someone
    will know)...

My condolences... and a question for the rest of the group:

Why even *try* to cut the thing exactly? Why not always cut it an inch or an
inch-and-a-half longer than what is thought to be needed?

Good old Marzocchi Z2 had a steerer that was seperate from the crown.
I remember replacing one once just so I could have a little more spacer
room, and it was like $30 for the part.

Modern fork, probably your best bet will be getting a new steerer/crown
assembly. Probably cost you at least 100 clams. Maybe more like 200 if
    it's a fancy fork.

Did you buy this fork through a shop? If so, ask them to contact the
mfger about this. If your cut wasn't too short, you may even be able
to get some kind of rebate.

But then, if you'd gotten this from a shop, they probably would have
cut it for you. And if they'd f'd it up, they'd be working out a
    replacement on their dime.

I've spent most of my money on mountain biking and windsurfing.
    The rest I've just wasted.

Because I learned a long time ago how to read a tape measure.

It was really quite simple. Install everything the way I wanted it, scribe a
line at the top of the stem, measure 3mm below, and cut with a tubing
    cutter.

I was wondering what is gained in return for the loss of adjustability options -
selling the bike, lending it to somebody who needs a different height..and
    so-forth.

A different angle stem, or riser bar height, or combination of both. I went
with an Easton Monkylite low rise, with a 120x10 stem, and 10mm spacer,
which put the top of my grips about level with my saddle, where I wanted it.

In my case though, I will not be lending my bike to anyone, so I was not
concerned with adjustabilty at the time. In the future, though, I plan on
going with a different bar (non-carbon), which may be cause for me to get
different stem. I may have to settle for one of those crappy 120X5 Thomson
stems to make everything come out the way I want it. I'm rambling now,
    so....

Well said. I've got about 3/4" of spacers above my stem and I think I'll
    leave them.

Maybe in your case, measure three times... wait a half hour... measure
    once more, than cut ;-)

No, just his testicles. (HOPEFULLY j/k! 🙂
