....the power of rest. I've been riding consistently ever since I built my 5 Spot and on my benchmark 10 minute climb I've been knocking off 10 or so seconds every time I ride it. Well, this week, due to work and concerts, I didn't ride at all. I went out today, easily rode a gear higher than normal, and knocked over a minute off of my time, from 9:58 to 8:52! It was nice and warm today which helped, but I've actually gained weight this week from drinking gallons of beer last Sunday and Monday nights, and from eating tons of pizza while staying late at work.
Remember, give those legs a rest, especially before an epic ride, take a few days off, and then do a nice easy ride the day before your epic.

Advice from my doc on training is to train 6 days a week and rest the 7th. he also said it's a good idea to alternate training and cross-training.

Good advice. BTW, how was the Mekons gig?
Gigs. Sunday night was a nice and mellow sit down affair at McCabe's Guitar Shop. Monday night was a full on blast of a punk fest at the Troub.

i think most people could benefit from a few days off before an epic.

good advice IMO.
for a particular person, with a particular training schedule, and a particular diet, perhaps. but change the person, or do the wrong schedule, or eat the wrong food, and it all goes to hell.

Your opinion on anything is quite amusing. Do you even own a bike?
Yeah, it sounds like that was pulled out of his ass. It's all relative. A newbie may want to go 2-1-2-1, a veteran may want to go 8-1-8-1, someone who really works hard may want to go 4-2-4-2. There's no need to coincide with the calendar week nor with one day off as long as you get some active rest in.

never said my doc was a fitness expert.
besides, it seems to be common thought that I am a pathetic half-wit looking only for negative attention and relies on the opinion of others to formulate an opinion of myself. I try to provide what I believe may be of some help to some, and get only negative attention in response. clearly this must be true.

And I'm on a 3-4 day training, 3-4 days rest (spaced out MWF and saturday or sunday) schedule, because I'm trying to gain weight. It changes depending on what you're doing, but the important part is you have some rest in there. I asked what to do over spring break where I didn't have access to a gym, and he told me to just take the time off and recouperate. I feel like I have WAY too much energy now. Of course, that also means I can't sleep, and I didn't have time with all my work to go to the gym today (hence posting at 2:30AM).

To each his own, as long as you don't overtrain.
generally what I was aiming at. "but the important part is you have some rest in there". but everybody else skipped over it I guess.
as for fixing the sleep, the best I can say is do something just before bed to burn some of the energy off. I used to take midnight rides (on well-lit roads) cause I couldn't sleep.

you know. I realized something. given my true past, the one I have been hiding from even myself. and given recent events. I realize there isn't a damn thing you can say to hurt me. you are an insignificant jumble of useless text.
