Snapped another crank on my cheap-[censored] commuter bike today. End result:
gash in left shin from broken crank, badly bruised knee from where I hit
the tarmac, bruised back (no idea how). Bloody things. Why don't the
cheap cranks last more than 6 months?

result in your premature death if it happened in traffic. Do yourself a
favour and consider the full cost of buying cheap gear. Failures like this
take away the joy of cycling and for a very small additional cost you can
get something that you will not be able to break.Kevin

that says, "Warning! Crank not to be used for pedalling".---

I'm not feeling litigious, just sore. I must have snapped at least 5
cranks in the last few years. Doesn't help that I'm 193cm, 110kg and
quite strong, so I tend to power on in top gear too much. Last time I
spent $400 on good cranks the bike got stolen within 2 months.
Still ... $30k would pay off a few debts ... -

$30k would pay off a few debts ...is it a MTB or road bike?
either way, a good set of XT cranks will work. Ask at a bike shop for
some old XT or XTR cranks. They will be banged up and you should be
able to get them cheap and wont look conspicuous on your bike. Agreed
that your size has alot to do with it, but i was breaking heaps of
stuff for years (im 6'5" and have weighed between 85-85kg..granted not
in your weight division!) and then i started concentrating on my
pedalling technique and trying to keep a nice, even pedalling action
and i have been putting less stress on the bike and breaking less
equipment. Your size will always make it hard to not break stuff, but
you can minimise it.--

I have a nasty tendency to take off at the lights in top gear, so it's
no wonder the cheap stuff keeps breaking. Hippy, you and I are probably
around the same size, but I suspect the fact that I have done martial
arts with a bit of plyometric training for the last 14 years
contributes to my crank snapping ability!
(And no, I don't jump backwards into trees!)- UM

off, but look out if I've got some room to crank for a bit.. (doh! race
secrets revealed ;-) ).Whadaya mean you can't jump backwards into trees?! What's the point of
14 years of plyometrics!!! ;-)hippy
