  2. It says head band, not helmet. Get it right.

I noticed nothing was said in that article about driver training, and the
standards of driver training in other countries, not to mention the issue of
road maintenance was shrugged off rather promptly.

Anyone else think the priorities are back to front and up side down?

    No, just inside-out.
    Yeah, I've had a long day 😄

But how can you make money off that? Did they mention a headband camera or
the list of fines for not wearing a headband? I'm sure they already have
    those worked out.

If it saves lives it has to be worth it

ROTFLOL over the mention of Vic. in the next.

  8. But if it only saves one life, surely it will be worth it! Just like roll
cages and 30 km/h speed limits, should we get them too?

    Volvos and Hats!

But they dont need helmets cos they have that impervious layer of
delusion surrounding their beings cos 'nothing can touch them, cos they
is driving the world's fifth safest car!"

    Not all the time.

I'm sure it would save lives if we dropped the metro speed limit to 30kmh
everywhere but I'm not sure it would be worth it. Hell, I'm still not
convinced that 50kmh is worth it...

It isn't difficult for a police patrol to determine whether a driver
is wearing a headband. They can spot you using your phone or driving
without a seatbelt, so enforcement of a headband rule would be no more
difficult than enforcing the above rules.

Contrary to populist TV programs, road rules aren't invented in order
to raise revenue. Typically, they are imposed to improve the trade-off
between fast transport and safety. The Keep Left rule is a good
    example...

There can be little doubt that increasing the level of safety
equipment reduces the risk of injury or death to the person using the
protection, _all else equal_. However, there is a trade-off with risky
behaviour - ie, people exchange some of the additional safety for
(say) faster driving. This can increase the risk to people that are
not using the protective equipment. A good example of this is the
effect of the introduction of seat belts, which enabled significantly
faster driving for the same level of driver/passenger safety but which
also increased the risks to pedestrians... Driver headbands could fall
    in the same category...

Yep, no doubt it would save a few drivers in the event of an accident.
However, as they would then feel safer driving around due to the extra
safety equipment then they would take more risks and increase the chance
of an accident. That accident could quite likely wipe out a cyclist or
    pedestrian.

When the UK introduced compulsory seatbelts the change in number of
drivers killed or seriously injured was statistically insignificant, but
there was a very significant increase in KSIs to vulnerable road users
    (cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders etc.).

Any introduction of "safety equipment" should be looked at very closely
to really see what the end result could be.

    What a dumb cliche.
Lets say 20 million headbands at $30 each for Australia.
    Investment $600M.
Inconvenience: not much. similar to seatbelts. Say, $50 over the
lifetime of the band? (~5c/journey) Another billion dollars worth.

Suppose it saves two lives. Was it worth it? Much better to
spend the time and money in countless other ways.
    What about 10 lives? No.
100 lives? Maybe, but I want to see some evidnece thats more
than wishful thinking on its effectiveness.

30km/h are you mad. We won't be truly safe until the limit is 10km/h

Well rolling at 10kph is a lot safer.

When the made bicycle helmets compulsory didn't they say it save 50 lives a
    year or some such number?
The number one cause of head injury is car accidents so anything that could
do for vehicle drivers what helmets have done for cyclists seems good.

You have a source for this claim of course?

No, "anything" is not necessarily good.

Safety and saving lives, live medicine, is not a field where an analysis
of economic benefits is suddenly not possible or appropriate.

If you've got $10 million to spend on road safety, you obviously spend
it where it will do the most good. If $10 million worth of freeway lane
centre barriers or $10 million of paint and signs for pedestrian
crossings saves more lives than the ame $10 million dollars spent on
bicycle helmets for car occupants or on soft padded lawns alongside all
bicycle tracks, then clearly you must spend your limited resources where
    they do the most good.
