I can't offer much encouragement here. I think that the
original shiny appearance is achieved by a couple of things.
First, the metal is buffed to a very smooth finish. Then, I
think they apply a coating of somethng called
"anodizing"(?). It must be like electroplating or
something(?).
It is possible that you have either stained the anodizing or
removed it(?).
I did something similar by wiping a D/A crank with a mineral
spirits soaked rag once.
