I picked up a used Thomson seatpost. After getting it home I
noticed that there are some deformations in the shaft. About
5-6 inches down from the top, there are a series of
'compression rings'???? along one side, with the slightest
echoing of these compression rings on the opposite side.
This is at the sides of the post, not to the front or back
of the post when installed.
These can be seen, but just barely. Running a finger down
the post makes the ridges/depressions very obvious. The
deepest compression area is less than .5mm or so, .020 or
less. Above this deepest one, which is the topmost one, it
looks like the metal bulges out just a bit.
When I run a straightedge up the *inside* of the post, I
can't feel *any* bumps along any wall.
My guess is that the deformations were caused by a
seatpost clamp.
Other than this, the post is straight and in decent shape.
Does this sound unsafe? I will be using on roads, and even
there I am a 'soft' rider, although not light- 180 lbs. or
so. Thanks.
