I have a numb index finger on my left hand. This is a direct result of riding for over 3 hours on Saturday with gloves that I think are too tight. I ride almost every day with minor numbness in my fingers. This is always temporary.
48 hours later and my index finger is still numb. Could there be nerve damage. I am convinced that the numbness is a direct result of my new gloves being too tight. The numbness is from the tip to the palm but not really extending to the thumb. The greatest damage is by the pad (fingerprint area)

Any ideas!!!!!
As for nerve damage - I can't really answer that one, but for one ride I kinda doubt it is permanent.
For fit - just like a bandage, you should be able to comfortably slide a pencil between the glove & your hand. Next item which I am still working on is gripping to hard on the bars or leaving my hands constantly in the same spot without moving them. The easiest way I have heard to work on the grip problem is drum your fingers on the bar occasionally.
As for the old doctor joke - doctor it hurts when I .... don't do that - get some new gloves, relax your grip, change your hand positions, whatever it takes. Hope that helps
I have the same problem but on my right hand. The index finger is numb. I noticed it about a week ago after a long 5 hour ride. It kind of went away but is worse now after my stage race this weekend. I don't think it is a glove issue because I have used different types of gloves on each ride.
I'm hoping it will go away but in the mean time, I'll keep researching what the problem is.
Check you scalene muscles in your neck. They are the guys that get worked when you are breathing hard. Your diaphragm can only do so much. Get a good Chiropractor!

I've had a similar problem with exact the same finger. I rode for about 19 hours over two days and only had problems on the left index finger. As I have some experience with numbness i quickly found that the numbness actually started off at my wrist. So for some reason i was leaning too much on my left hand. 😕 The reason for that was that over all the hills i would shift A LOT and during shifting (with my right hand) on my mtb (flat bars) i would lean a lot more on my left hand than my right. But before right away thinking about buying drop bars i did change my shifters in a slightly more ergonomic position which made it possible for me to shift while still having ABOUT 50/50 pressure on both wrists. Drop bars could be a solution but you might still be using the wrong technique while shifting. Ride on... 😄

Ive had same numbness when riding 8+ hrs a day. Was leaning too much on left hand while shifting with right. Solved by making sure i wouldnt and by slightly adjusting position of shifters. Experiment for yourself and you'll get what i mean. The good ol drop bars will help but you still have to ride intelligently. Ride on...
My numbness problem went away shortly after I posted. Your problem, simonbroekhuize, wouldn't explain my problem with one hand, because I was riding a bike with downtube shifters. I narrowed the problem to some new gloves I had been using, some nashbar gloves that had some extra padding between the index finger and thumb. Once I quit using these gloves I haven't had any problems. Now I always buy gloves with minimal padding and that seems to work for me, and they are much more comfortable. Pearl Izumi Gel Lites are really nice.
