  1. I've had a request from the BBC that I'm passing on here.

PM, the BBC R4 news programme, is looking for someone who
has had navigational difficulties on Ben Nevis and is
prepared to be interviewed. They are doing a piece on the
proposed way marking on the Ben in about a weeks time.

If anyone fits the category, or you know someone who does,
and are prepared to be interviewed [on tape, not live] would
you please email the reporter, Huw Williams direct on

    "][email hidden]

They do not want anecdotal stories of the idiots you saw
setting off but a first hand account.

Do they want to interview someone who objects to the very
idea of waymarking - ye gods.

Can't people just buy a copy of Trail magazine and take a
    compass bearing?

Well we know what we can do with cairns don't we. Sounds

Trail magazine constantly points out to its readers the
dangers of relying on a single source of navigational
    information,

Which is precisely why waymarking would be potentially
    dangerous.

Never mind that it may persuade inexperienced people to
tackle the hill in poor weather - or lull them into thinking
that the mountain navigation lark is easy - so let's have a
    go at Ben MacDui next.

For the benefit of those newcomers who aren't aware of the
    joke:

"MAGAZINE BLUNDER DIRECTS WALKERS OVER CLIFF

    "Britain's biggest-selling hillwalking magazine has
apologised after the latest issue contained a route that
would have led climbers off the edge of a cliff.

"The February edition of Trail gave advice to walkers caught
in foul weather and poor visibility on how to get off
    Britain's tallest peak safely.

"If readers had followed the magazine's directions they
would have plunged from Ben Nevis' north face, which has
    claimed a number of lives."

    ananova.comsm 858065.html

This is not the first time Trail magazine has made such an
error, nor indeed is it the first time they have made
    exactly that particular error.

Of course, as the editor pointed out, Trail magazine
constantly points out to its readers the dangers of relying
on a single source of navigational information, so of course
nobody following their instructions would have been foolish
enough to rely on their instructions, so no problem.

Though the result would be a net loss of cairns since
presumably they'd have to remove most of the ones that are
already there but lead in other directions. Which will make
    Martin's job much easier ;-)
