Conection from Cardiff ?

place to start walking from I shall leave to others more
familliar with the area than I am.

here.htm You've have to make a few phone calls, but looks
like you need to get a train from Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil
and then a bus from there to Brecon.

Just being picky - I'm sure you know anyway - the popular
route is from Pont ar Daf about half a mile nearer to
Merthyr than Storey Arms.

I thought the Storey Arms route was the motorway! Both
heavily eroded anyway, and I've rarely been up that way.

The Pont ar Daf route has been pitch paved and is horrible
but has easy access once you've crossed the Daf on stepping
stones, easier if you just paddle :-)

The route to Brecon passes Storey Arms. That's the best
place to start walking from, assuming you want to climb a
mountain that is. It's a much longer walk to Pen y Fan from
Brecon, and far more boring (lots of country lanes), but
maybe Jacob wants to visit the town? Can be good when the
jazz festival is there.

Not sure about times etc, but there is a daily bus between
Cardiff and Brecon costing about £4.50 return. The bus
passes Storey Arms, the main tourist route to the top of Pen
y Fan, the highest mountain in the region. However if you
need to drop cases etc off at accomodation beforehand, you
will find that Brecon is a few miles removed from the
mountains, and you may find easier access if you take a
train to Newport, then bus to Crickhowell, which has Black
Mountains on the doorstep. It really depends on what sort of
hills, walking and accomodation you have in mind.
