  1. Hi,

I`m new to all this wild camping stuff and would like to
know if there are any sites that give good locations to
use for wild camping? I live in Nottinghamshire so would
really need to travel (which isn't a problem) but with
this in mind, I wouldn't know where to start looking
other than a specific area IE lake district, yorkie
    moors etc.

If anyone could mention names and locations, that
    would be ok.

    Thanks

    Gordon Williams

You could try the UK Backpackers Club. IIRC They have a
list of sites etc. Problem is you need to be a member to
    get the info:-(

An afterthought;-) Best bet, I've found is:

    1. Pitch late, leave early.
    2. Use common sense.
    3. Leave your chosen site as/was.

Personally, I've pitched in some weird and wonderful places
    in my time. Using commonsense.

AIUI a "site" is simply the spot where you pitch a tent,
wild or otherwise. I've "sited" my tent in many good spots
    in the wilds.

Is it the case that once you have pitched your tent you have
domesticated the site and hence it is no longer wild?

    No.

Where do people get the idea that the word "site"
means something official and permanent? A site is
merely a location, a place where you put something, in
    this case a tent.

A site *can* be permanent, but it doesn't have to be.

flagging/notifying "best sites" for "wild camping".
Site(s)??? Now, I'm sorry but you'll have to forgive me
since I'm not a bona fide camper in the wild, but if you're
asking someone to point out a "wild" camping spot aren't
you really, really, really, absolutely really really
missing the whole point? Just put your basha up and get on
    with it!!!! Bluddy jessies!!!

Your best bet is to look for the appropriate symbol on an
OS map, or give up pretending to be a "wild" camper... an
oxymoron if ever I heard one!

    I agree.

Circulating information on the best "wild camping" sites is
likely to result in tent ghettos in precisely the places
    where they are least desirable.

Surely a sense of uncertainty and adventure is implicit in
the term wild camping? Relying on other people to relieve
you of that uncertainty is missing the point.

Anyone unable to decide on a likely site from the map, and
then to deal with the consequences if turns out to be
unsuitable, should camp on official sites.

The worst is when you give up in the dark and camp in
a really [censored] spot only to find when you wake up the
next morning that there was an excellent spot just 20
    yards away!

Did similar to that at the tail end of last summer. The spot
I found in the dark wasn't terrible but in the morning there
was a great spot not 10m away! I went back early this year
with my son and we used the better spot.

Most of my wild camps were in a bivy bag but even with the
Argos 1MPA I still think you can camp comfortably in a lot
more places that people realise. I tend to have a rough area
for where I want to camp and it rarely takes me more than 15
minutes for me to find a reasonable spot when I get there.

Yeah of course, up to a point. But you can't deny that there
are some good locations to pitch a tent and some bad ones.
Depending on the terrain, some wild areas offer countless
opportunites for pitching a tent. In others (heather, rocks,
bogs, very steep ground) it can be very difficult to find a
    good spot.

If you are using a bivi or basha then the opportunities are
much greater. A tent requires reasonably flat ground with a
    decent surface
(i.e. dry grass with enough soil to stick the pegs in). A
    small tent
(i.f. the Argos 1 man) can fit into small nooks and
crannies, a larger tent (i.e. the Nallo 2) requires a
larger patch of flat ground, so it's more difficult to
find a decent site for that.

There's a valley in the Beacons that has very steep slopes
all the way down, yet at one point there's a perfectly flat
patch of dry ground right next to the river, large enough to
pitch four or five tents. It's the only flat bit in the
entire valley. Nowhere else could you pitch a tent around
there unless you like pitching on 30 degree slopes. Now
that's what I call a good wild camp site.

And I'm not going to tell you where it is either...

And it's not the one you're thinking of Chris. :-)

I think where I was coming from implicitly acknowledges your
point Paul (although only I knew that ;-) and I see that as
part of the draw, part of the challenge. I was just
questioning the tack seemingly being favoured by "others" in
looking to go "wild camping" but pitching up according to
someone else's list... might as well just look in Camp Sites

Don't get me wrong I'm not berating anyone who does that,
