email me for suggestions on restaurants [although it
sounds like our tastes are different]. Right now, I'd
like to suggest the Alterra Cafe at the lake. Fancy
coffee, pastries, light food, but that's not why I
think it's worth a visit. It's on the lakefront w/ a
large outdoor seating area, and it's housed in what was
until just a few years ago, a working water pumping
station. They've left all the machinery intact, so it's
an interesting little museum. Our lakefront is still
very beautiful, but your nose will know it if the
cladophora have returned.

Meanwhile, we're off to Santa Cruz and Los Gatos for a
while.

Tell Bela I said hello. I just spent a few hours on the
phone with some of the old-timers there [insert
operating system company here]. Kinda sad that everybody
is leaving or left.

I'm trying to think of food suggestions in Scruz, but
I'm drawing a blank - there's really not much there, as
you probably know having probably spent a fair amount
of time there - At least when compared to food in, say,
San Jose e.g.

King Chuan, Royal Taj, Vasalis, and Charlie Hong Kong are my
top four restaurants. O Mei? No thank you.

I miss Santa Cruz - but not for the food ;-)

Our favorite Santa Cruz food adventure is going out to
99 Ranch near San Jose, loading up on Oriental produce
to cook for their fabulous potlucks, then eating
Vietnamese or Chinese food in SanJose.

You must know John DuBois, and perhaps my daughter
Irene, too. We're going out there for their wedding
July 4, on the 15th anniversary of their meeting at a
beach party. --thelma

on capitol drive in brookfield) for some of the best steak
milwaukee has to offer!

I'm a *big* fan of Vietnamese food in San Jose. That's all I
eat when I'm in town. Bela is too, from what I recall. I
know we'd talked about it a few times.

I don't think I ever met Irene (just looked at her picture),
but I certainly know John. Bela (and John, and Don Draper)
were largely responsible for my getting a job there in the
first place. They said, "Yeah - we know that guy". And the
rest was history ;-)

John's practically been a member of your 'family' for a
while then, back from the 'Armory days' when they all
lived together. Looks like John (and now Irene) *still*
live there.

So this makes Bela and John brother-in-laws. That's
almost geek- overload - too much for one family :-) Small
world, eh?

Anyway, congrats on the new addition to the family. To make
this more food related, there's two great Vietnamese places
- one at 7th and Santa Clara, across from Asian Garden which
burned down a few months ago, and the other one at 11th and
Santa Clara, north side of the street "Vu"-something.

Asian Garden was my favorite though (it was called Houng
Truc back then). I used to live right behind the
restaurant - they introduced me to Vietnamese food. Too
bad to see it go.

I've heard good things of Sestri - owned by the same
family as Aldo's. El Palomar used to be a favorite of
mine as well.

Sestri must be new. Aldo's and Palomar were decent, but not
my type of restaurant fare. I was a big fan of fish and
chips out on the wharf, too. But not [anything] from
Stagnaro's. Beach Street Cafe was good breakfast, if I ever
got up that early.

Heh...I rented a cottage on Campbell, oh Lord, over 30
years ago, for $125. a month.

There's only one 'cottage' left on Campbell Street, it was
two houses to my left - I was 117 (not 112), so that would
have been 113 Campbell, I think). It was last rented by a
group of punks, 4 of the 6 were arrested for the high-
profile, brutal murder of a Watsonville businessman.

The Togo's was there until maybe 1995 or so. It's now a
