So here is my spin on why O'Neill and his ilk are predators
on those who listen to them, and who buy their products.

THE FACTS

1. Alternative therapy for cancer shortens survival. In
other words people who use alternative therapies don't
suffer as long as those who don't use alternative
therapy. They just die sooner.

2. Dave Wickware, O'Neill and their supporters on the
internet, by offering alternative advice, or by selling
unproved ginseng or other remedies to customers are
actually reducing the suffering of people with cancer.
Boy, that logic fails to hit them very hard.

3. The government, especially in Canada, doesn't have the
resources to prosecute these people. Many charges brought
against Canadian-based quacks have actually been brought
by the U.S. government. The cancer quacks continue to
thrive in Canada because the government just doesn't
understand that quacks like Wickware, and licensed
doctors like Ravi Devgan (who just had his license
revoked) are all swimming in the same cesspool.

4. My web site profiles many Canadian quacks and scam
artists who have contributed to the early deaths of many
people, both in Canada, and in their offshore or Mexican
operations over the years. It was Canadian doctors and
politicians who favour a hands-off approach to
alternative medicine who directly contributed to the
promotion of these early deaths.

Some of them have invented cures in the form of "magnets",
some have used i.v. ginseng, ozone, hydrogen peroxide. Why
even the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine is
heavily supported by companies that make things like ESSIAC,
a totally useless herbal legend. And don't forget the QXCI
people who import these wacko computer programs and
biofeedback interfaces to treat cancer, and who teach others
how to use them to defraud the public. There are even MDs
who contribute to the scams.

5. Wickware and O'Neill and others who prey on the weak who
have cancer, or who have children with cancer will never
be brought under control unless the government passes
legislation that protects the public. It may be a free
country up here in Canada, but these vultures are not
free to pick the flesh from those who are about to die,
and tell them that they will be cured. This is not hope,
it is criminal.

6. One of the most notorious cancer quack operations, CSCT
that marketed the Zoetron scam device, started right here
in Kitchener-Waterloo. Did the Canadian government go
after them. Yeah right. Don't hold your breath.

world with a fine example of cancer quackery. Of course
their proof that what they do actually works is evident
in their Yellow Page ad. One of them joined the Chamber
of Commerce which is all you need in this town to gain
credibility. And then tack on a few fake initials and a
PhD or two, and they are just as credible as all the
other Toms, [censored], or Harriets who sell junk to their
customers in their health food stores, or who do
Vegatesting, or who stick non-sterile needles into their
victims in the guise of practicing Chinese Medicine.

8. William P. O'Neill sits in front of his computer in
Ottawa penning vulgar filth and using threats via
anonymous posts. He is perhaps best known for his
contribution in two prominent cases, 13 year-old Tyrell
Dueck and ace Canadian curler Sandra Schmirler. And don't
forget his dancing around with Christine McPhee on one of
her radio shows. And a stellar performance on Cross
Country Checkup back on March 21, 1999 when I think he
broke all records for lasting ten minutes with Rex Murphy
who to this day remains clueless about cancer quackery.

EVIDENCE IS PLAINLY THERE FOR ALL TO SEE

DiBella quack from Italy mesmerized quacks in Canada who
convinced the media that he was the king of cancer therapy.
Trouble is his treatments killed people.

Di Bella's "miracle" cancer cure shortens survival The Di
Bella therapy, a cancer treatment touted as a cure for up to
100% of patients, actually provides results far worse than
standard cancer treatments, study results show.

The therapy program was developed in Italy by Dr. Luigi Di
Bella, who claims to have treated more than 10,000 patients
over the past 20 years. Di Bella's drug cocktail consists of
a low dose of cyclophosphamide -- a chemotherapy drug --
plus various other drugs and vitamins. Di Bella is a
physiologist, a scientist who studies how the body works.

With Di Bella's cooperation, a research team led by Dr. Eva
Buiatti, from Azienda USL Firenze in Florence, Italy,
reviewed the medical records of 314 patients who received
the Di Bella therapy. All but four had also received
standard treatments.

Compared with patients identified in the Italian cancer
registry, who received only standard therapies, patients who
received the Di Bella therapy "showed lower survival
probability over both the short term and the long term for
all the cancer sites considered," Buiatti's team reports in
the November 15th issue of Cancer.

Specifically, patients who received only standard treatment
were twice as likely to survive compared with patients
treated by Di Bella. Buiatti and colleagues conclude that
"results from this study do not support any evidence of the
(effectiveness) of the anticancer strategy proposed by Dr.
Di Bella."

The Di Bella therapy came to national attention in Italy,
and the Italian courts, when a number of Di Bella's patients
organized and demanded that Italian hospitals provide the
therapy free of charge. So the Italian government funded a
study of the Di Bella therapy at 26 cancer clinics
throughout the country. A total of 386 patients were treated
with the Di Bella therapy under the supervision of other
physicians. In a separate report in the journal Cancer, Dr.
Giuseppe Traversa, from Instituto Superiore di Sanita in
Rome, Italy, and colleagues report that fewer than 1% of
patients experienced a partial response to treatment. None
achieved a complete halt to their cancer. Traversa's group
concludes that the study results are "incompatible with the
initial claim that (the Di Bella therapy) might represent a
cure for any type of cancer."

"Alternative medicine is a poor alternative to conventional
medicine,"
Dr. Paul Calabresi, from Brown University School of Medicine
in Providence, Rhode Island, argues in a journal
editorial. "By replacing worthwhile mainstream
therapies, it robs many people with potentially curable
cancer of precious time and a chance for survival."

medicines (AM) and cancer survival. A national multicentre
study was carried out in Norway in December 1992 to assess
the prevalence of AM use among cancer patients. One of the
aims of this study was to assess the association between AM
and long-time survival. In January 2001, survival data were
obtained with a follow-up of 8 years for 515 cancer
patients. A total of 112 (22%) assessable patients used AM.
During the follow-up period, 350 patients died. Death rates
were higher in AM users (79%) than in those who did not use
AM (65%). In a Cox regression model adjusted for
demographic, disease and treatment factors, the hazard ratio
of death for any use of AM compared with no use was 1.30,
(95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.99, 1.70; P=0.056),
suggesting that AM use may predict a shorter survival.
Sensitivity analyses strengthened the negative association
between AM use and survival. AM use had the most detrimental
effect in patients with an ECOG (Eastern Cooperative
Oncology Group) performance status (PS) of 0 (hazard ratio
for use=2.32, 95% CI, 1.44, 3.74, P=0.001), when compared
with an ECOG PS of 1 or higher. The use of AM seems to
predict a shorter survival from cancer. The effect appears
predominantly in patients with a good PS.

Alternative medicine use by cancer patients associated with
shorter survival

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The mortality rate among
patients with cancer is higher in those who use alternative
medicines than in those who do not, according to a report in
the February issue of the European Journal of Cancer.

Ds. Terje Risberg, of the University Hospital of Tromso,
Norway, and colleagues examined the use of alternative
medicines by cancer patients at multiple centers in
Norway, and assessed the effect on long-term survival.
The 515 patients in the study were followed for 8 years.

Three hundred fifty patients (68%) died during follow-up,
according to the team. Alternative medicines were used by
112 patients (22%). Of these, 88 (79%) died during follow-
up, compared with 262 of the 403 patients (65%) who did not
use alternative medicine.

In an adjusted Cox regression model, the hazard ratio of
death associated with alternative medicine use compared with
no use was 1.30 (p = 0.056). The investigators observed no
differences between different types of alternative medicine.

"Alternative medicine use had the most detrimental effect in
patients with an ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group)
performance status (PS) of 0 (hazard ratio for use = 2.32; p
= 0.001), when compared with an ECOG PS of 1 or higher," Dr.
Risberg and colleagues report.

The investigators believe this is the first study to show a
negative correlation between alternative medicine use and
survival. They express doubt that the effect is causal,
since the alternative methods used "seem rather innocuous,"
and surmise that alternative medicine use may be a marker of
some other unrecognized prognostic factor.

Even though the analysis controlled for disease severity,
Dr. Risberg and colleagues suggest that alternative medicine
use may reflect patients' perceptions of their prognosis.

Alternative treatments for cancer increase mortality

A study just published in the Journal for the Norwegian
Medical Association concludes that patients who seek
alternative treatment in addition to traditional medicine
have a greater mortality than those who only accept the
prescribed treatment. The study by Terje Risberg et al
investigated 515 cancer patients with a follow-up of 8
years. 22% of these patients sought alternative treatment.
79 % of these died in the period, as compared to 65 % of
non-users.

The study concludes it is unlikely that the treatment is
dangerous in itself. Rather, it points to a number of
possible reasons for this effect. One may be that cancer
patients who seek alternative treatment are slower in
contacting medical professionals if the cancer returns.

If you still want to look at the dismal side, then focus on
the increased cancer incidence. This is an interesting
phenomena, since it only exists because of the success of
antibiotics, vaccinations, and improved medical care,
hygiene, nutrition, etc. Earlier not as many people lived
long enough to get cancer, Parkinsons, MS, etc.

If you want to effectively lower the cancer incidence, just
support the anti-vaccinationists. If they succeed,
overpopulation will no longer be a problem. Not enough
people will survive, and if they do, they won't get old
enough to get cancer. There will simply be fewer people in
those age and risk brackets.

Alternative medicine doesn't work for cancer and many
other chronic or fatal illnesses. In fact many
supplements actually cause cancer, or increase the rate
of dying from cancer.

There is no evidence that practitioners of alternative
medicine help reduce cancer rates, or alleviate suffering,
etc. Patients with cancer who use alternative medicine
actually die much sooner than those that don't use
alternative medicine.

You just don't understand the facts that alternative
medicine and their promoters are actually increasing the
burden on our healthcare system. Some of the researchers
from leading medical institutions have actually done
fraudulent research. Why is that?

What evidence do you have that alternative medicine prevents
illness, or cures disease? The fact that people with chronic
or fatal illnesses use CAM doesn't count at all. If they use
alternative medicine for diseases like cancer, they will
surely not do as well as those who don't. The fact that you
posted a news article about a study done by
Dr. Ruth Patterson doesn't count in the grand scheme
of things.

Here are more posts and news items about the safety, risks,
and fraud in the alternative health and nutraceutical
industry. If you don't believe these diverse sources than
your mind is closed. But then again, I never suspected that
it was open to discussion an rational thought before we
started this little discussion.

Yes she does. She will call you a member of EOM and be done
with you. She never lets facts that contradict her firmly
held beliefs get in the way.

I think this statement is too generic alternative medicine
covers a broad range. Thing like Coley's toxins have been
shown to improve the quality of life for cancer patients
where mainstream has failed. We will soon see (2 years
maybe) the results from the NCCAM study on Gonzalez/Kelley
protocol this could be a shocker from the pro-med bible

There is zero evidence that CAM helps seriously ill
people feel better, or get better. That is the whole
bloody point here.

The studies show that alternative medicine adds nothing to
the life expectancy of cancer patients. It in fact shortens
it. The issue is that it doesn't work, and that it causes
premature deaths.

Those who choose to use alternative medicine, and I don't
mean prayer or homeopathy, I mean those who go to cancer
quacks, die a miserable death.

Cancer patients who use alternative medicine in lieu of
real medicine suffer less because they die sooner. Cancer
patients who use both real medicine and alternative
medicine wisely, have a better quality of life, and may
actually improve their chances of survival.

Purely anecdotal, but I have a friend who use alternatives
to deal with the side effects of chemo, and supplemented his
diet with vitamins, etc. He is now six years post-op removal
of a a large chunk of his colon. His surgeon and oncologist
encouraged his alternative program and he beleives that it
allowed him to maintain himself.

I would never, ever suggest alternative in lieu of real
treatment.

people feel better, or get better. That is the whole

The studies show that alternative medicine adds nothing to
the life expectancy of cancer patients. It in fact
shortens it. The issue is that it doesn't work, and that
it causes premature deaths.

Those who choose to use alternative medicine, and I don't
mean prayer or homeopathy, I mean those who go to cancer
quacks, die a miserable death.

Studies have shown that anti-oxidants reduce the effects of
chemo. I have the whole study here which I think Dr Terry
Polevoy's claim is based on and there's a wide range of
treatments most of them consist of mental and homeopathic
treatments. It may be that the groups that were selected
were just 'unbalanced' hence the effects on mortality. Anth
