Got on the road at 06:50 this morning, headed west toward
th'hills -Elland, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge (18%-er),
Mytholmroyd and the road with 'longest gradient in England,
rises 962 feet, length 5.5 miles' or so the sign said. Got
to the top with no problems, stopped about three quarters of
the way up to put my rain jacket on. Man it was wet up
there. Descent into Littlebrough wasn't too bad, wide road,
very little traffic, no tight corners and good sitelines
round them. Rain at 35moh hurts but it stopped by the time I
got to Rochdale. Climbed over the hill to Delph, started to
rain near the top. Even heavier, 11% descent - ouch. Shelter
in Delph for a while had some ravataillement. Set off again
to climb over Saddleworth Moor. Is this what the locals call
Strines ? The map said it was the A635 to Holmfirth. Guess
what ? it started to rain very heavily. At the top it was
mighty cold, water washing across the road, I could hardly
see the road at times. Pedalled down the descent until it I
spun out coming into Holmfirth where at last there was
shelter in the form of a coffe shop. Of course it was busy
and I had to sit outside under their awning ! Set off once
the rain stopped, got a front wheel puncture when leavig
Huddersfield, hardly surprising with all the grit that was
washed into the road. Put my new tube in, it failed to
inflate, was punctured by the same piece of grit I guess. I
did feel for grit before I installed the tube but with my
finges wet and cold I guess I missed it. It started to rain
so I walked to a garage and used their paper wipes to clean
it out properly. Patched the original tube and got back on
the road. Now heres a wierd thing I floated up the A62 past
Whiteleys, I can't remember the last time I went up there is
39x19 after 60 miles. My legs were hurting but not objecting
to the demand I was putting on them, wierd. Perhaps I have
suddenly got really, really fit or perhaps the cold and wet
causes some pain respnders to shut down.
Glad to get home after 71 miles and crossing the
Pennines twice but I being rained on for pretty much the
last 35 miles.
