sorry, i know that i really can't get much more "newbie" than this question. On the rear wheel, is it really necessary to have that plastic chain guard thing that goes around in the spokes? And how do you get one on if there isn't one? do you have to take off the cassete? is it worth the trouble? Thanks.

Thanks.You don't need it if your RD is always perfectly adjusted and never overshifts into the spokes. Even with an adjusted derailer, JRA stuff happens too. You cannot put one on with out removing the casette.
