Vaseline is actually recommend to grease the
gripshifter shifter because it has nothing in it to
harm the plastic shifters.

I also seem to recall reading some where Vaseline mixed with
motor oil makes a good replacement for Judy Butter. YMMV

Judy doesnt like it when I butter her with this mix. She
much prefers a Vasseline and Baby-Oil mixture with a drop of
peppermint oil for that "all-over tingly sensation"

I wouldn't put it on exposed cables, as Vaseline will catch
dust, dirt, etc. that will enter your cables as you
shift/brake. All grease does this, though, not just
Vaseline, so my argument isn't against Vaseline
specifically, just grease on exposed cables.

If you need to waterproof, run full-length housing or get an
allegedly sealed set of cables. To me, greasing exposed
cables is asking for trouble.

You'd be better off with something that has some teflon in
it. GT-85 is great stuff.
