Anyone have a good formula for determining crank length.
Also, any idea what the various pros ride?

Give us your height and we will give you your length...
Marquis, at some point in the past, said The general rule
of thumb is:
* below 5'10 use 170mm cranks on for general (road) racing
and training,
* 5'10 to 6'1 use 172.5mm cranks
* 6'1 plus use 175mm cranks

At some point, one of them used longer cranks as a desperate
attempt to keep up with Merckx, and destroyed his knees...

You sure it wasn't just trying to keep up with Merckx that
destroyed his knees?

I think sizing is typically longer nowadays.

We did take pictures, but why you'd want to see them is a
little odd to

why you so funny mark?...
One of the few highlights of my dreary miserable existence
is hitting yours or Nieko's sites and finding new content.
How else is a dork like me going to hear the funny stuff
about US racing that doesn't make it into the 'real' press?
Just saying...
Seriously though, yours is in my rotation of 20-30 sites I
hit each day and I do enjoy your stories and honest
perspectives.

But then, you wouldn't create a "Faces of RBR" website
either.
J "me neither" F
Indurain ran 180's for TT'ing and some other stages.
I did that being the same height (6'-1"😉, I ran 175 on my day to day bikes and 180's on my TT bike. Couldn't tell if it really made a difference since I was middle of the timing whenever I did TT's. But whether it was just a psychological boost, or if it really made a difference having longer cranks, I don't know for sure. I was never fast enough to justify them .......

I like the "Faces" page. Puts a face to the names. Not
always a good thing...

Indurain is reported to have used 190s when he did his Hour
Record
rides. ( bikecult.comsports recordOpen ↗

To me, crank length is about what you, the rider, feels
comfortable with. I'm 6'0 and I like 177.5s. One thing to
think about is that the difference between crank lengths
is really not that much. A 2.5mm change is only 1.45%
difference - pretty minimal.

From Cyclingnews and their Pinarello tour/history article:
"But Miguel didn't have a very aerodynamic profile... he sat very high up compared to today's riders. If he had used the same type of (low) position as Olano or Ullrich he would have been even faster in the time trials. Indurain used 180mm cranks on this bike; in fact, from May onwards, when he was in good form and had more power, he usually switched from 177.5mm cranks to 180s. Ullrich does the same thing. After Indurain's win in at the '96 Olympics, the entire team used this model the following year."

I was thinking of Cyrille Guimard, in 1972. He won 7 stages
in the TdF (TIOOYK), and in 72, in spite of gonalgia and in
an effort to keep up with the Cannibal, he went from 175 to
180 or something like that, and this move pretty much
terminated his career. One of the historians on this board
would probably be able to fill in the details, unless they
are busy with the Tour?

Well it sure wouldn't work for me. I'm on 165's at slightly
under 5'-10".
172.5's lead to sore knees.
It's individual, some shorter folks can ride 175 or 80's
with great results, some tall folks need short cranks. This
has been well covered, which a google search or two will
reveal. See Dr. Jim Martin's studies which IMS also have a
crank length "sizing" ratio by leg length, which I believe
calls for shorter cranks. No one can tell you what "you have
to ride" with a measuring tape, is the moral of the story
(IMHO). --TP
