Pearl "Attack" shorts

I have 2 pair of "attack" shorts that I bought last year
and use in rotation with several other pairs of shorts. I
was wearing a pair on a ride last month and someone from
behind commented that the fabric in the rear had become so
thin that I was basically mooning the world. For as little
as these have been worn and as much as they cost, that's
pretty lousy.

Question about your new attack shorts. Last year they had a
very thin chamois. Now it looks like they've gone to heavy
padding like all the other shorts out there. I hate that. Do
yours have a thick pad or a thin chamois?

I have not worn them enough to determine durability yet, but
I have a set of Louis Garneau bibs that have what sounds
like a similar blue sculpted pad. They seem pretty durable,
though. These don't get a huge amount of wear, since they're
my only pair of team shorts, so I only wear them to races
and the occasional club ride (usually once a week, maybe six
times a month)

Worth a look, and should be within your price range.

Hi, I took a look at a pair of the Pearl Izumi
Ultrasensor's, which I think has the same chamios as the
Attack short. The blue corduroy is similar to the material
that is used in the Voler Team shorts, the Performance Elite-
L, and others, but it is only the outside layer. Each of the
shorts that I mentioned and the PIs all have different
padding and overall shape. Take a look at PIs website, there
are two somewhat round areas that are quite thick. w-w-Open ↗

- Performance Century Gel - I like them, but for some, the
pad may be too thick and heavy. I have also had problems
with loose threads and stitching coming apart around the
elastic on the left leg.
- Performance Elite Lite - these have the Multi-L Airstripe
chamios, which is not real thick. I like these and when on
sale marked down to $29.99 from $49.99 are a very good

I like Ultrasensor shorts, and have acquired enough of them
over the last couple of years (I wait for sales) to last
through my laundry cycle. The oldest pair has probably been
machine-washed over 100 times and is still okay.

On the other hand, my wife bought me a pair of high-priced
Pearl Izumi socks this spring whose dye ran all over the
first time they were washed. I can't remember the last time
this happened to me with athletic clothing, it has been so
long that I assumed this was a problem fully solved long
ago. I'm now uncomfortable enough with Pearl Izumi's
apparently variable quality control that I'm questioning the
wisdom of investing a substantial amount of money in their
products so I'll probably look at other brands of shorts
when I need a new pair.

Sure, I don't think you can go wrong with them at $29.95. I
honestly have a hard time believing any of the cycling
shorts are worth more than about $50. What could possibly
make some of the PIs worth $199? Can they be a $119 better
than the Ultrasensor? This is an honest question and
unfortunately I am not financially able to find out for
myself. But otherwise - Life is Good! Jeff

I have a pair that I rotate in that are quite new. I really
like my Canari's a little better. Not sure which Canari's
they are however. They were $60 USD though, that I do
remember. They seem to be holding up okay.

I had recent problems with pearlizumi attacks as well. front
seams splitting after only a couple uses, and I also found I
hated the "new" blue pad. Besides being a little too bulky
(felt like a diaper), I found that on longer rides, the
"flat seam stitching" between the blue and black side pads
always started chafing after about 2-3 hours.

I've gone back to the plain old Performance Century short,
drawstring, one-piece synthetic chamois, and fairly sturdy
fabric... $35

I like the PI blue chamois and have not had any problems
with durability. I've used mine on a half dozen centuries
this year, plus lots of shorter training rides.

I had a pair of the Attack shorts and couldn't get along
with the chamois. My wife tried them and loves them.
Different strokes..... My vote for best buy in a short is
the Nashbar bib with the regular pad (the less expensive
bibs). I've had a pair of these for 3 years, washed them a
bunch, and they're still going strong. Also still my most
comfortable shorts. The other short that I really like is
the Volers. They're a bit more expensive than the Nashbars,
but also very reasonably priced and comfortable. Haven't
tried any of the more expensive ones, I just don't see
spending $100+ for shorts. Smokey

My son has a couple pairs of Performance shorts that have
the look of transparency you mention. I told him about the
same thing; "Hey, you can see right through your shorts." He
already knew about it and told me the base layer fabric in
them is what we were seeing. It's a "nude" color. When he's
bent over in the drops the shorts stretch a little more and
open up the top fabric to reveal the base layer, hence the
appearance of transparency. Could this be what is happening
to your pair? You know, he always has more women following
his backside than I do, dang kid! On the other hand, they
prefer "my" beefy quads to his. Life is good!
