I was under the impression a lumbar nerve impingement would
cause pain down the leg. For 3 weeks I have noticed a
"burning" sensation in the posterior right hip and somewhat
deep in the outer buttock. I can not trace this to injury
etc. When lying on my back, the straight left leg raise
causes an increase in pain. Could this be disc in nature or
possible a bad ligament strain as well?

syndrome commonly presents in this way, and is easily
confused with sciatica. I'd recommend you see a doctor if
your symptoms have been going on for three weeks without
improvement. -

When you raise it or someone raises it for you? Does
dorsiflexion of the foot exacerbate the pain? -

first. It runs over the sciatic nerve, and can compress it.Stretches can be found at www.exrx.net

++++++++++++When someone raises it for me there is "mild" discomfort
along the femur axis below the hip. If I raise it myself,
the pain really comes on beyond 50 degrees; however; if I
force myself to relax, it subsides in a few seconds and I
can raise to +90. Dorsiflexion DOES exacerbate it
slightly..If max pain is a 10..Then dorsiflexion raises the
pain by maybe a 2..I know...not very scientific, but the
best I can do. The pain is not in the area of my back;
rather just below the hip along the axis of the Femur, more
anterior. The best description I can muster is this: a
"burning" sensation, or; like a rope is restricting my
movement due to pain, but "stretches" when I relax.A movement that really brings it on is if I stand, bend at
the waist and raise my left leg +90..WOW! That hurts! Advil
seems to help, but for only an hr maybe.I have read as much as possible on herniated and/or
protruding discs, L4-L5 etc..but the symptoms seem to NOT
follow. My ROM is 100%..touch my toes etc.Its been 3 weeks perhaps, so I am REALLY wondering if I
should take a wait and see posture? -

kSounds like you have a tight Tensor Fascia Latae or Ilio-
Tibial band. I take it that you do not have a
trochanteric bursitis?See a physiotherapist or chiro. Medical practitioners aren't
trained in rehab, except maybe physiatrists.Emma

diagnosis before getting treatment.
